View Full Version : I gained a gut so I'm going back on my trusty diet
And not a quad belly, either. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif
We were looking at old photos and my wife exclaimed, "Hon, you were so slim and sexy!" LOL. Had she forgotten I was the same way only a year ago. At least I think I looked the same.
Oh well, this happened to me when I quit smoking many years ago. I defeated it then and will do so again.
Then about five years ago I got into a bad habit of eating a rich breakfast every weekday at the cafeteria where I worked. Oooops, I gained a big gut at that time, too. I dealt with it by eating tunafish for a few weeks, supplemented only by a couple pieces of fruit or veggies. I was doing something like an Atkins without knowing it. It really worked, too.
So... I've started my tunafish diet again. The room where I work smells like tuna. I have to go buy airfreshener. And I have to bring in an electric can opener. But I think it's working after only a couple days.
On my FES days I eat a little pasta before/after my ride in order to replace lost glycogen in my muscles. But for the most part I'm eating tuna, a few veggies, a multivitamin and some other supplements without calories. It really works! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Jeff, I've had success in the past w/diets I've made up on my own. One I call the "Cereal, Soup, Salad, Sandwich" diet. I just have one of those things every meal. Sometimes it's cereal for supper, or a sandwich for breakfast. I keep it simple, try to prepare it ahead of time, and I end up saving a lot of lunch/eating out money when I do that. I also drink a lot more water, try to eat some fruit and veggies during said diet.
It's far from scientific, but it works for me.
I have been eating the Manila mango and I think it's safe.
PN
Well, I ate about 240 calories today plus I drank about 300. Oooops. Still way under 1000. Just gotta make sure I stay healthy. I hope my multivitamin is working. I've heard you need proper enzymes from food to use vitamins. So I'm taking enzyme supplements. Tomorrow is FES day... I'm looking forward to eating! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Paul - They eat a lot of mangoes in Manila and elsewhere in the Philippines. When ripe they're very sweet and must contain loads of sugar. Filipinos beat this by eating them while they're still green. They add either salt or this really disgusting fish sauce that makes me barf. I'm not kidding either. I've watched a dozen Filipino children squealing with delight as I spit back out that fish sauce. They love it, though, it's amazing.

beer and nilla cookies....Great diet!
Jeff:
It's my understanding that the fish sauce is called "Bagoong" and you put this on top of the green mango. Filipinos really love this and I would think that most Westerners would not enjoy it and it also doesn't smell very good. The Filipinos here in California buy these ripe mangos by the boxes. Just remember diet is for life.

Hi Jeff, and whomever-
has anyone noticed FES helping to lessen/tighten/reduce width size of their hips?
"I guess pain is a great motivator."- Yanni
Eine Welf, Ein Volk
Liz - Because of FES my thighs and buttocks are much bigger. Not sure about my hips. But I do have to buy bigger pants now.
FES will help convert fat to muscle mass which also increases metabolism. And it has to burn loads of calories. I would say it would have to be a help as exercise is always recommended to those wanting to lose weight.
When I gain unwanted weight it is all in my belly. So just losing a few pounds takes it all off there, too.
Since I posted this topic twelve days ago I have lost most of the extra gut that I had. And some of my friends, from eating tuna all the time.
I don't know why but it's really easy for me to lose weight. I just really cut down on what I eat. Reserve carbs for before/after my FES ride. And cut down on liquid calories. And boom... the extra weight just falls off me. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

You just got me motivated and tunafish (with a little apple cidar vinegar) has worked for me also. In the past month I have put on a gut. I was in New Zealand for 2 weeks for work eating out all the time and late at night. 1 day after I returned from New Zealand we went to Maui for 2 weeks for our (pre)-honeymoon and ate and drank more than usual. So, back to the tunafish. I also like tuna steaks but read recently that too much tuna is bad for your memory due to the high mercury content. I read that the stuff in the cans isn't as bad because they use smaller fish.
Steve
Steve G - Thanks for sharing that. I put A1 steak sauce on my tuna. Very tasty. Eat it right out of the can usually. Really works. Mercury sounds scary, though. Guess I'll have to read up on that. Thanks, again.

I love tuna, and the apple cider vinegar sounds good. Have to try that soon.
Jeff, A-1 Steak Sauce? Are you kidding? http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif Sounds awful, but hey, to each his own.
No, A1 is deliciously tangy on tuna. Or maybe because there's a reaction with the mercury. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/redface.gif I just read that mercury is worse than they thought. In 2003, roughly 6% of cans of white albacore tuna had mercury concentration >4ppm. The FDA safe level is 1ppm.
Good thing I'm not pregnant. Maybe I'll try sardines part of the time.

Jeff
Did you see the mercury levels for non-Albacore in a can in that study by any chance? I thought what was coming out of the can was within safe limits and I am wondering if it has to do with Albacore only...
Steve
Yeah - Non-white, non-albacore was much safer. But solid, white albacore tastes so good! Oh well... it's a diet.

Thanks. Agree with you that the white albacore tastes better. My fiance on the other hand prefers the plain old store brand tuna and says it tastes better.
