What I wouldn't give for a good Reuben sandwich. The last time I had one was when we were all in New Jersey for the Abilities Expo 2002. It's obviously time for a Reuben!

Down here in Cajun Country, most people have never heard of Reubens. Anyone have a good recipe for one? Do you do anything different from the corned beef, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing? What kind of bread do you use?

Or, if you're not a Reuben fan, what are some of your favorite sandwiches?

Yeah, thousand island dressing. It's good but I love the sound of the mustard and horseradish. What's the red kind?

Marth dear,

Kap is right. But, I too love a Reuben. Quizno's(sp) has a Reuben that's the closest thing I've found to the real deal. We have a Katz(sp) here which is suposed to mimic New York food, but they suck and way overpriced. God I love corned beef and sauer kraut! I sometimes miss living in Germany.

Favorite sandwich? So many of them, I love delis.

Wow, mark the date, Kap and I agree on something! Martha, come on girl you know it has to be on rye!

There's a good Jewish deli on Ventura in Encino but I think that may be too far away for you. Sometimes I miss LA (Los Angeles not Louisianna lol), just for the food, shopping, beach and mountains though, definitely don't miss alot of other stuff.

I could go for a good italian sub anyday! Ok, I'm hungry...

Learned to love this one at a little restaurant (no longer there) called the Epicurian next to the Minor Theater in Arcata, CA when I was in college (don't say anything about fat, please!). All their sandwiches were named after famous movies or movie roles:

The El Cid
Country style whole wheat bread
Cream Cheese
Thinly sliced salami
Sliced tomatoes
Alfalfa sprouts

There is a great Jewish deli near me that serves the most wonderful hot tongue sandwiches...I always get mine on a good quality corned rye and add their sweet hot mustard. Yummmm....I'm drooling!

Martha...the red kind of hoeseraddish is regular h/r but they add beet juice or pureed beets when they make it. You see it at all the jewish delis...it's the best!

Diamond...you have to mean Art's Deli between Whitsett and Laurel Canyon...GREAT PLACE...hey you're talking to a former "Valley Boy"...and BTW it's actually Studio City...not Encino...LOL http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif

Yep, that's the place, I'm practically foaming at the mouth just thinking about it!!! I've always disliked Studio City for some reason although I lived in Toluca Lake/Burbank for awhile and it's next door. Different feel in Toluca Lake though, you know what I mean. Valley boy meet Valley girl - I actually lived across from the Zappa's when that song came out, they were a very strange family! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

Diamond...see...we have more than just 1 thing in common. I was in the northeast valley...sunland/tujunga/shadow hills area...but my territory for home remodelling covered all the valley, beverly hills, and hollywood. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif

What on earth took you from Cali to georgia??? That's GOT to be a culture shock... http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

My stepfather was transferred here when I was in 6th grade, when I graduated High School I moved back out there. When the Northridge quake struck I was 8 1/2 months pregnant and alone and when my mom came out for my daughter's birth I said "take me home" and I left. It was an instant decision but a good one. The biggest culture shock was no beer on Sundays out here!!! What's with THAT?

It took years before I stopped thinking I could just hop in the car and go get something around the corner, like at Art's Deli! Sometimes I still call the airport here LAX and the phone company Pacific Bell. Ever have italian at Fab's, they were originally in Tarzana and then moved to Sherman Oaks I think. They had the best italian food ever! I still miss it.

I love red Reubens on Jewish rye with German potato salad. Sometimes we make them at home with a sandwich press.

I've also had very good bbq pork Cuban sandwiches in my travels. I love good toasty sandwiches.

Ruebens have to be one of my favorites too, but this time of year you have to be eating BLT's with fresh tomatoes from the garden !:yumyum: And you better get your booze before Sunday here too. You can't get any at all within 20 miles of my house as it is a "dry" county. Polish up that buckle on the "bible belt " !!!

And people wonder about why I'm against living in Texas and such places. Prohibition didn't work! Love me real home grown tomato BLTs. We fry up a pound at a time crispy and keep it wrapped in paper towels in the fridge. Toast up the bread and a touch of mayo. :applaud:

KLD, I don't do tongue but ate a lot of El Cid with herbs in the cheese and no sprouts in Rome. Now a favorite is a grilled <spray the bread with Pam to cut fat> muenster cheese, thin sliced salami and tomato sandwich. Country white or Italian Tuscan bread really makes it if you can find it.

There is a law against growing tomatoes?

You can buy booze after noon on Sundays in Texas if you live in a "wet" area.

My bad. When Prohibition is mentioned these days I forget about dry counties and think more of the prohibition in agriculture that's been going on for 70+ years now. Okay, back to sandwiches...

Toasted Dempster's 12 grain bread, marble cheese, cucumber, mayonnaise. Delicious, but it’s a big sandwich that can cut the top of your mouth like Cap’n Crunch if you take too big a bite.

But doesn't a real Cuban have thin sliced pork as well? I 1st ate them when I lived in Tampa going to college. I so miss NY deli's, Italian pizza, Chinese food but still make do w/ the pretend stuff in FL.
