Lucky you! With our very own Martha? DA and Martha, WOW! Heh DA, you would like my 18 year old son. He is President of the GOP club in his all male Jesuit high school. He believes he is just about the only true conservative in his school... he is now serving an internship with Congressman Rob Portman from Ohio. He scarfed up tickets to see the President next Tuesday in Cincinnati. So what did you and Martha talk about?

Kath, I think he means Martha2. As much as I'm sure I would enjoy it, I can't get away from the paintbrushes, etc. long enough to eat with anyone! BUT DA, I totally agree about good bbq. I've become hooked on a place called Sonny's in FL. It may be a chain but they have wonderful pork ribs! Yummmmmmmm.

Yep he meant martha2, but martha it would have been great if you could have joined us. I'm sure you were battling the same rainstorms we were. And it's still pouring in Houston now!
DA, as usual, I had a wonderful time with you and your mother. And the food was wonderful. Willy Ray's smokes their meats for THREE DAYS! It was so tender! I had spare ribs and DA had the brisket and smoked sausage. I had a bite of his brisket and it melted in my mouth. I have to admit that the rice dressing was a little disappointing, but we south Louisianians take our rice dressing seriously. However DA's mom and I both remedied that by adding some barbecue sauce to ours. DA, you said yours that you make is better. I want your recipe. The other side order I had was not disappointing. It was a twice-baked potato casserole. YUMMY! It was rich, so I couldn't eat it all.
The conversation was delightful. DA, I get the feeling your mother isn't as excited about Republican politics as you are, but, hey, parents are perfect! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
Folks, he acts like a tough turd but he's such a nice guy. And Kate, believe me, he's crazy about you. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif I'd give anything to be able to sit and with the two of you! What fun!

DA, great link. I only wish they'd had a picture of that monstrous steer head that loomed over us while we ate .. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif I don't think I've ever seen anything so BIG!
Yep Mary it was a real Texas bbq joint. What surprised me the most was that they also served boiled crawfish ... and these Texans were eating them! I did a double take! However, DA has explained to me in the past that southeast Texas is more or less an extension of south Louisiana. Lots of Cajun families, cooking, customs, etc.
See ... and I bet everyone thinks Texas has greater influence than little ol Louisiana! Hah! They DREAM of being Louisiana! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

That's the place I was thinking of! There is only a river between Louisiana and Texas, Martha. I used to go there every year and go swampboating for my birthday. Man, I'm missing Texas. My friend calls Beaumont Bore-mont. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Sorry DA ... I googled CareCure instead of the web. This is what I found ... YUCK!!!
BTW, the article said something about this being only in Texas ... and you can KEEP it in Texas!
Cow Chip Tea
Indications: For the treatment of chest congestion.
Preparation: Find a fresh cow pattie, nice wet one that's good and green from a cow eating lots of fresh green grass. Scoop it up and put in a kettle with fresh clear water. Boil for a good while. Strain several times through layers of clean cheese cloth until you have a perfectly clear, light green tea.
Usage: Serve the sufferer a large cup of Cow Chip Tea, full to the brim. Within an hour the subject should begin to cough up the congestion from which he suffers.
Note: Repeat treatment as necessary

DA, you're hysterical ... I can't top that! You win! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Cow chip tea: my mother writes a gardening column for our local paper, and she knew about cow chip tea, but ONLY AS A FERTILIZER FOR PLANTS!!! What in the heck are you Texans doing drinking that? And for congestion???
OMG! If I drank a cup of that stuff it would be more than my congestion coming up! GAG!
We have Cow Chip Tea in Alabama, except here it's called Many Weed Tea! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif And here, they recommend adding a little lemon juice to it. And also here, it is said to cure ANYTHING, not just conjestion! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I have never tried it, but about a year ago there was a big article in the Birmingham news about this woman who makes it for herself and who ever else might be sick and want a swig. She was a very old lady, and in very good health, so it must work! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif I, however, will choose death over the ingestion of cow dung! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

X, that's interesting. So, Alabama too, huh? All I can say is "Viva la Louisiane!"
However, if you think about it, you boil that (literal) sh*t for quite awhile, so I assume it's killing all the bacteria, but still ... barf!
I'm thinking about posting a question for KLD/Wise about this in Care. I know they already think I'm a little weird, so a question from me about cow chip tea shouldn't surprise them too much. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I thought more on this (maybe I think too much if I'm giving serious thought to cow poo! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif) and I'm thinking about all the good things a cow eats. Alfalfa grass, red clover, dandelion, honeysuckle, and probably lots more things that are medicinal herbs just growing out in the field. Things we pay a fortune for at the health food store. So maybe by the time it goes through the cows digestive system it's a super herbal infusion. Like when you make an herbal tea infusion straight from the herb, but this one is power packed by being infused through the cow first. Then you take the pattie and make another infusion that draws all the "goodness" out when you make the tea. hmmmm....granny may have been right after all! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif I've always looked at it from the angle of "but it's cow poo!"...I wasn't thinking about all that herbal goodness the cow eats! It will be interesting to see what the medical experts here have to say! My dad always suggests some Many Weed when we are sick, but we just laugh. Maybe we should be putting the kettle on instead? http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

The chitlins discussion reminds me of a funny story:
A few years back a friend of mine took me with her to visit her friend who was recently released from the hospital. When the door opened I was hit with a horrendous smell. My first thought was that someone in the house had had an "accident" and maybe everyone was used to it and didn't realize others could smell it.
We went to her friends room to visit as she was bedridden and sat to talk for about 20 minutes or so. I missed most of the conversation as I couldn't get my mind off that s**t smell and wondering how everyone was enduring it.
Finally my friend says to her friend "those chitlins sure smell good" and turned to me and winked. She was a sly one (I say was because she died 3 years ago of breast cancer) and would always get me with things like that. She knew I was suffering that whole time but knew I wouldn't say anything so as not to embarass anyone. I said "thank God, I was thinking everyone here lost their sense of smell."
We had a good laugh about that for many years. I still miss her antics.

DA, I'll be passing through Beaumont again tonight, but I'm afraid the monsoons we've been having are going to be pretty bad, at least according to our forecasts. Think I'd better just keep on truckin, let you and your mom stay dry. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Pappadeaux's next time. Looking forward to it. Until then, behave!

I wonder if cow chip tea has some of the same crazy effects (hallucinogens) as shroon juice. I had some friends in college who boiled the mushrooms that grew in cow chips and it was some pretty crazy stuff. Too dangerous for me, but I was tempted. They only used the mushrooms from cowsh*t.
Of course, this old man who is a friend of the family in Mississippi still keeps a potion in his refrigerator that he swears will cure anything. Best I can tell, it's moonshine, honey, peppermint, and lemon juice. If nothing else, you will sleep good. and yes, there are still quite few people with stills.

shhhhhh! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif Don't tell them that! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
I can't remember what those mushrooms are called....they just call them 'shrooms and it's 'shroom tea here. I would never try it. They are poisonous and can be deadly or at the least, make you go crazy. Yes, I suppose when making your cow chip tea, you'd have to be real careful not to pick up a patty with mushrooms in it! Always be picky when picking your patties! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

DA, I read your post about the absence of rain right before I left town, and determined you were crazy. It was pouring at my house. Houston was flooded. Surely Beaumont was in the line of fire. However, sure enough, got to Beaumont and I could see the stars in the sky! Also looked like a great turnout for the Pat Green concert.
Tallied up all the potholes on I-10 in Louisiana. Let's see ... according to my records there were exactly: 0! However, once in Texas there was that oh so pleasant ....thnk.thnk.thnk.thnk.thnk....on the highway until I thought I would lose my mind!
Sigh. Traveling through Texas sure makes me appreciate home. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

DA ... were you at Willy Ray's this afternoon around 2 p.m.? I drove thru for a brisquet sandwich and saw a vehicle that looked just like yours in the HP space, tag and all! That would've been too weird!
BTW I'm stopping at the Chevron by Willy Ray's now every time I pass through Beaumont. The cashier there was so nice. She even came out to the pump and took my cash for the gas! Unheard of! Beaumont's got some nice people. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Saw that ZZ Top and Hank Williams Jr. will be at Ford Park June 2. Maaaannn ... if I wasn't going to NYC, I would ask you out on a date for that one! Do you like Redneck music?

The reason you felt no holes in louisiana was because the holes were filled with rain water. you hydro-foiled over them.

you stop in bmt because our prices are so cheap. we have 2 exxonmobile refineries, 1 cheveron, dupont, fina, 2 texacos, clark, huntsman, goodyear, and more. if you were like beaumonters, you drive over to the exxonmobile plant at night and get the gas straight from the tank farm...
how you know the cashier didnt come out because he/she thought you might drive away without paying? lol.

Yes, I KNOW that you might eat other places! The vehicle looked just like yours and .. oh never mind!
You mean Beaumonters STEAL gasoline from these plants? Well no wonder that cashier thought I might run off! No, actually she came out to tell me that the credit card machine on the pump didn't work, and I showed her the $20 bill in my hand. She said ok, authorized the pump, and then while I was pumping came out and said I could just pay here there, because it was going to be $20 even. She was being very considerate and kind!
And you've seen what a sweet, innocent, trustworthy face I have. No one would ever suspect ME of doing that. YOU maybe. Never ME. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I knew ZZ Top was from Texas but didn't realize they were from Beaumont, same w/Chestnut and Byrd. Cool.
martha...guess where i was today?
if you said the bunny ranch...no.
i was in st martinville. i left sunny texas for the hurricane in lafayette. i wanted to call you and maybe come over and crash your shack;watch your tv, make a sandwich from food in your refrigerator, nap in your bed, talk on your phone, type on your pc,play your radio loud, gawk at your neighbors wife, stink up your bathroom, then repeat everything again.
i have to admitt lousiana has fixed a lot of those potholes. however there is still a stretch between jenning, including lake charles, and vinton that sounds like your running over liberal protesters. we stopped and ate at the rice palace. all in all it was a nice visit to cajun?creole country.

DA, I can't believe you a) were in St. Martinville and didn't alert me and b) were driving, etc. in that horrible storm! You're right, it was practically a hurricane yesterday. Nice day to visit Louisiana! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
You could have hung out at my house. You could even sign in as me on CareCure and post away! NOT!!! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif
So tell me, and you may want to email me, but I think I know why you were there. Was it good news? I would have been happy to have been of service, for what it's worth.
I've never eaten at The Rice Palace, but I've heard about it. It's in Rayne or Crowley, right?
Yep, I noticed there's still a LITTLE work left to be done along that stretch. However those patches aren't in MY parish! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif

DA, Where is Willy Rays BBQ ? I went to Mississippi last week to visit my parents and kept looking for it but must have missed it. I need a few more directions.
Martha, any good Cajun spots right off I-10 in Lafayette? We stopped in Rayne and almost tried Gabe's Poboys but it was closed. Looked like a hole in the wall, but that's the places I like best.

Carl, Willy Ray's is on I-10 in Beaumont on the right if heading west to Houston. There's a Chevron station right before it. It's got a lighted sign, so it's fairly easy to spot. I can't remember what exit you take to get to it, because I took the wrong one and got lost, but managed to find it before I ended up in Mexico. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif
As far as Lafayette/I-10, oh yeah baby. Prejean's Restaurant on I-49 N about 2 miles north of I-10. Great food, decent prices. Often has a good ol Cajun band playing. It's where DA, his mom and I first ate last fall. Good stuff. Also, in Henderson, east of Lafayette near Breaux Bridge before you hit Atchafalaya Basin, is Pat's Waterfront Restaurant. MMMMMMMM. Love that place. Excellent food, family owned, been around for decades, favorite with the locals.
Gabe's! Boy that brings back memories. One of my brothers used to take me there when I'd come in from out of town. Your instincts were right on target! It's the authentic stuff. Please don't tell me they're permanently closed ... http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif
Of course there are all kinds of other places but they're not right off I-10. You might get lost. Oh well, even if you did, just call me, and I'll join you! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

yeah it can be hard to see, the freeway way is 10 lanes at that point. if your going towards louisiana, take calder street exit. do a u turn under the freeway. follow feeder road about 2 blocks. if your going towards houston, take calder or laurel street exit. follow feeder road.
i suggest you order the 3 types of meat plate.
brisket, ribs, and sausage.

Hey DA ... just returned from (another) birthday lunch. (See in Louisiana, birthdays are like Carnival season--celebrate every day for two weeks. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif Texas=boring, one-day birthdays http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif) Anyway, we went to AB Henderson BBQ on Hwy 90, near Lafayette Regional Airport, where you saw the "alligator" http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif.
I had ribs and chicken, smothered cabbage, rice dressing and squash casserole. Oh man, next time you're in town we've got to go there. Mais, pooh yie!
