I've eaten weird things from around the world. However, I cannot and will not ever eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When I make them for my children, I gag.
I love peanut butter. I like jelly on toast. Both my parents and all three of my siblings LOVE PBJs, but I can't and won't eat them.

I love PBJ...martha what's wrong with you?! j/k http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
What can't I stand...hmm. Vinegar. Liver. Any weird part of an animal (tongue, etc). Anything involving raw meat of any kind.

I cannot eat sushi or liver. I try and stay away from fried stuff at this point to, not because I dont like fried stuff, but just because it is not healthy to eat.

Brain, kidney and eyes...Oh yes, peanutbutter. I never learn to eat that. When i hear peanut, i think of salted little nuts and beer, and when i then hear peanutbutter, i get this drunk taste in my mouth. I would never be able to enjoy that on bread.

Anything raw, can't do the tartar or sushi thing. Also anything that was once slimy, like snails. :x

when I was in the service I got to go to some out of the way exotic places. I drew the line on brains. I ate all sorts of things raw and cooked but I draw the line on brains of any kind.

The weirdest thing I've ever eaten - maybe monkfish liver and fried shrimp heads at a sushi bar. The liver was good; the shrimp heads - couldn't get around the eyes starin' at me!

I will absolutely not eat english peas. I can't even stand the smell of them. I'd rather die than eat one. I'd probably eat brains before I ate an english pea. http://home.cablelynx.com/~jchaney/puke_smiley.gif
I've had sushi before, and not all of it is raw. Some of it is quite good, but I won't go out of my way to eat it.

"would you eat shit?" he asked.
"oh yeah, if it was my own, i'd do that for a million," i said.

Veal...haven't ever, and have made a "choice" about it since we visited a farm as a child and I asked Mom why the baby cows were separated from their mothers.
I was at a RATHER awkward rehearsal dinner and they brough veal parm instead of chicken parm...my sister sent it back...she said I turned green as I stuttered, "nooo, this is just dark meat chicken. I can eat this."
These veal calves weren't even the WORST case scenario in the pens where they can't turn around at all. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif

Duge, since my children enjoy reading the Food section too, as a parent, I'd appreciate posts like yours to remain in R&S. I know you don't mean any harm or offense, but I'm a lot more sensitive to this stuff since my 14 and 11 year olds have started reading and posting too.

I am with you Martha thanks for stating it.
I think we invited family involvement, but truthfully, as much compassion as my children have developed through my work and friends, and their enjoyment of the lab at Rutgers, I do not like them looking at this site yet.
Since all the noise in the past several months, in honesty, I have not been so proud of it. If my daughter had read that comment, I would have been furious.
I think its time we raise the bar again...

Mary,
Speaking of deer meat, me and Scott some friends get together recently and his cousin made homemade dip. It had Velveeta, salsa, Tabasco sauce, a ground hamburger meat. It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. Later he revealed to us that it was ground deer meet. I never noticed a difference :-)
I had deer steak once and it was icky though.

Lindsay,
Once upon a time, I was the hunting widow, I butchered many deer and cooked many venison recipes...of course, their heads were on my walls, and their other parts ...well you never knew where you would find them. One day...something unrelated happened and I completely lost my taste for it. In an instant life can change. I guess we all know that though....anyway...I don't hate it, I just won't eat it.
Life remains complete regardless...

Ewwwww...well I was hungry but you found a quick way to fix that. LOL But I will not be ethnocentric and say it's weird...it's odd to me as an American, but apparently there are cultures out there that value that ritual...more power to them. Just don't invite me to come visit the baby. And I'll be really cautious about eating food at the houses of new parents. LOL

my parents instilled in us that we should try all kinds of food. That being said, lamb brains are on my list of do not eat.
It was during a Muslim feast in Tunisia. I commented, "How sweet, every child seems to have a baby lamb as a pet."
Next day.........a lot of dead lamb on the tables.

My children aren't picky eaters but I was shocked a couple of times by these:
-One night I told the kids we were having chicken for supper. My son quickly asked, "The kind with bones in it?!?" Thank you McDonalds and Chick-Fil-A ... http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
-Same child wanted a bottle of water from the refrigerator, but we were out. I told him to fill up a cup from the sink. "SINK WATER??!!!???" he asked in total horror. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

My son used to complain because a chicken bone would always get in the chicken 'n' noodles. I told him that if the poor chicken didn't have bones they would be little poultry blobs. Finally, I started making him "pick" the chicken, i.e. remove the bones. He got over that little fit of being fastidious pretty quickly...

Well I think it's safe to assume that many of us will be adding hot dogs with "earthly products" to our list.
When Scott and I were married, he like for me to make chicken and sausage gumbo using ALL the parts of the chicken, including the heart, liver, gizzards (shudder). I could not, would not, will not ever eat that!
My brother in law told me about a man he worked with who would spread mayonnaise on his bananas and eat that for lunch. Yuck. No thanks.
