View Full Version : DA: Beaumont BBQ?

On my way to Houston last night I stopped in Beaumont and ate at The Pig Stand on College thinking it was a BBQ place. However, I ordered their BBQ sandwich and it was one of the best I'd ever eaten--even with relish on it! (I would NEVER have ordered it that way.) I even put some cole slaw on it, something I learned while I was in North Carolina. Yum, yum!

While I was waiting for the sandwich, I wished I'd ask for your recommendation of the BEST BBQ in Beaumont, since I'll be passing through quite often.

My children and I have eaten BBQ in different areas of the southeast, kind of a "hobby" or excuse for an outing. Now I need to know what's good along the I-10 corridor. Anyone else have any suggestions?

When my son and I drove to Arizona when he entered the U of A we saw many signs for steak houses that specialized in cooking with mesquite. We never got to try them because while we were driving it wasn't dinner time. We stopped in El Paso and wound up in a TGIF Fridays. We both had the Steak w/Jack Daniels Sauce. To this day I still think how those mesquite steaks might have been.

had i known you were coming, i could have treated you.

not to be bias, but all beaumont bbq joints are good. next time try willie rays bbq or brousards links and bbq. their is another place open up in a very rough section of town, so you know it must be good, so you better go their only in the day time...lol.

i also recommend stopping by here for dancing and live entertainment.
guarantee fun. its downtwon.

Sorry I didn't tell you about my stop beforehand, but it was a last-minute, female sudden change of mind as I rolled into Beaumont. I'm usually a pedal-to-the-medal, make-the-best-possible-time, drive-thru only maniac when I travel, but since I was "sans enfants" I was feeling a little more adventurous ... and relaxed! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Thanks for the recommendations. What's the name of the "rough" place? Sounds just what I'd be interested in ... during the day! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

You know I can't keep from promoting my home state... I'm even around 6 hrs east of it (long state), but each time I'm near it's one of my first thoughts... ahhh BBQ!!!! MEMPHIS, TN n never forget it!!! I haven't eaten at a place there yet I didn't love!
P.S. Pat, c'mon down, there's room http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

DA, just got back and I saw Willie Ray's from I-10. I'm definitely stopping there next time, and I'll try to notify you in advance. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Tim, having traveled and eaten BBQ across the southeastern US, I must say Tennessee has some good stuff! And there's something about Memphis ... mmm mmm mmm. Maybe it's the spirit of Elvis! I ate at the original Corky's in Nashville years ago, but the "chain" store here is the pitts (pun intended http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif). I was disappointed.

Pat, maybe we could share some of our best barbecue recipes with you so you could make some of your own ... that is until you move down here to God's country. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Pat - Just think of BBQ as one of those great Pennsy Dutch pig roasts with sauce! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

BTW - If anyone wants to post their favorite BBQ sauce recipes, there a recipe topic in Members, here: link to "Post your favorite recipes" (http://carecure.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39265)

my tip is to use mesquite...no charcoal.

DA, I'm so glad you mentioned PappaDeaux's! Every time I go through Beaumont, I see that place and the parking lot is jammed... good sign. And we've got a Luther's here too. It's not Cajun, but, next to Dwight's Restaurant, it seems to be a big favorite with the local/Cajun BBQ crowd.

Yep, mesquite is a must ... bigbob mentioned that earlier.

And you STILL haven't given me the name of the restaurant in the rough area! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Is pappadeauxs a chain? I seem to recall eating at a similarly named restaurant in Houston years ago.

Thanks Jackie! This is the deal: I'm a mid 40s, suddenly-found-herself-single-again woman who's trying to keep life as simple and stress-free as possible. Having to explain to every person that I meet on this forum that "I'm a GIRL!" didn't exactly boost my self-esteem or sense of femininity. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif Using my real name seemed to solve that problem.

Wesley, I THINK it's a chain but not in south Louisiana where I'm from, although it's got a very Cajun sounding name. AAA-EEE!

Next time in Houston, check out Goode Co. Barbeque. You won't be disappointed. Be sure to save room for a piece of Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Harlon's is like the MP of BBQ. They have a nice storefront and the sign outside says BBQ, but nobody really knows what they're cooking in there. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

What's the name of the restaurant?martha it's CITY MARKET it's one of those GUNSMOKE looking towns and the BBQ place sits right there in the square of town. they have the pit pits in back of the market and you go back there and they serve you by the pound and you can come up front and eat either on a plate or good ole freezer paper http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif. and the riverwalk is a cool place also.

City Market in Luling and Cooper's in Llano are my designated BBQ stops when traveling around central Texas. Both are legendary for their BBQ, and neither has ever disappointed.

There's a Luling City Market in Houston too (been there since the early 80's). I Don't know if the two are related, but I suspect they are.

I'm so excited about all these recommendations. City Market definitely sounds like a winner.

DA, marinated for 48 hours? in dark beer? then mesquite smoked? Forget any restaurants in Beaumont! I'm going to your house! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

LOL @ Ashcroft and Houston Intercontinential.

BTW, you STILL have not given me the name of the place in the rough area. Pleeeezzzzz ... that's where I want to go!

Minor detail: It's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (since 1997).

Actually I started to type that instead of "Houston" but changed my mind. Knowing DA, even a simple thread about BBQ could get turned into a flaming political discussion with the slightest provocation. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

liberals know nothing about good bbq. liberals bbq is cooked with veggie meat and cooked in the oven to avoid smoking up the air.

Since we've ventured off the I-10 path, I would like to HIGHLY recommend Sprayberry's in Newnan, GA, just south of Atlanta on I-85. When we lived in Atlanta, I'd stop there often on my way to Louisiana and spend almost $100 on their food as a treat for my family.

If any of you remember the late AJC columnist Lewis Grizzard, it was his favorite place to eat. And, btw, Newnan is hometown for Alan Jackson http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif However, never saw him at Sprayberry's. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif
