jusyt a brief fyi, i switched to eas myoplex protien shakes, from met rx, wow much better. 245 cal , 42 g protien, these are great, getting better pump during workouts, great energy(i use as meal replacement as well, 1 shake at work then dinner after work).

the biggest difference i notice is they act as a diuretic, which i like, but they will constipate you a bit for about 1mth then you get used to them, and drink more.

i dont need to do any sort of bowel program, but if you do be aware of this. it through me from going bout every 2-3days to 3-4 but no bloating or anything.
its no biggie just seems like my body is using more of my food.

Myoplex is good. I'm drinking ABB's Monster Shake. 50 grams of protien. Great for breakfast.

BTW: High protien drinks are great for working out and building muscle. Guess what else they are good for? Staving off pressure wounds. Protien builds and reinforces muscle tissue. Muscle tissue protects from wound breakdown.

Something to think about.

Also: High protien diets, combined with reduced saturated fats, carbs, and simple sugars fend off the dreaded quad belly as well.

Has anyone else heard about protein drinks staving off pressure sores?

Sufficient protein intake is critical for both prevention and healing of pressure ulcers. One method for taking this protein is is high protein drinks, but there is no indication this is any better than getting your protein via other (often cheaper) sources such as fish, meat, and dairy products. For those who will not eat these items, or cannot eat these items, protein drinks may be helpful. We often make milk shakes with ice cream or sherbert and Ensure or Boost.

I recently bought a blender and have been making a lot of fruit smoothies. They're really good but it seemed like they weren't quite enough to completely replace a meal. Today I got some whey protien to add to them to boost the nutrition level. Has anyone tried making their own protien shakes? Any positive or negative results using whey protien?

Nate, you may want to try making your smoothies with fruit and yogurt. Yogurt is high in protein, and if you get the non-fat types also low in calories. I like strawberries, bananas, & yogurt blended with a few ice cubes in the summer.

One word of caution with the protein drinks - they're also really high in phosphorus; my son developed bladder stones (grit, really) about two months after starting to drink protein drinks, and when the urologist had the stones analyzed they were phosphorus stones. He had my son back off the shakes, and the stones disappeared.

Martha2, I don't think protein drinks in and of themselves will 'stave off' pressure sores; certainly a high protein diet will help the skin, but - after too much experience with skin breakdowns - pressure reductions in teh form of weight shifts is the most important thing, IMHO.

And as for Larwatson's comment about reducing quad belly, certainly a good diet will help out with that, but the dreaded 'quad belly' comes more from lack of abdominal muscle control; certainly if a person is carrying extra weight, it will be even more noticeable, but I've seen pretty skinny quads who still had the 'belly'.
