Hi, Jeff,

Just tried to log on to chatroom; applet was loading, then got a message that 'digichat 3.5 is not compatible with digichat 4-0'. What to do?

That is an error that was resolved a few days ago. Try clicking refresh when you get to the applet loading page. Your browser could be using a cached copy of the applet page.

Same here. I've refreshed and dumped my cache. Still no access.

Jeff, tried the 'refresh' and no go on that, also. This is the exact message that appears:

'You may not connect to Digichat because the version of the Digichat Client (3.5.0.622) is not compatible with the version of the Digichat server (4.0.2.0)'

I get the same message as Marmalady, and have made the same efforts as Clipper and JLB. Obviously there's still a problem.

I'll see if their tech support has anything else to offer beyond cached pages. If we're having this problem then others probably are too.

One other member here was also getting that. He finally fixed it and replied this way:

Thanks...everything is fine now...I have windows xp and I went to the tool
bar to enable Java script.

I have XP and couldn't see where JS is enabled/disabled in IE but I could see it in Netscape. Any of you guys using Netscape?

If it's any consolation, I tried chat on my mac at work for the first time in a week and got the same error!

So, I dumped my cache. Then the applet wouldn't come up at all!

I rebooted then all was fine!!!

do any of you with this problem, use the same ISP ?
I was speculating if any of you people with problems, conects to internet through proxy. And if you perhaps could try to bypass the proxy and see if you isp still will let you through to the internet. If one of you could do that and tell what happens it maybe could help.

I had no problems using chat until the switch. Now I have no access. I've dumped my cache, checked my Javascript and rebooted. Still the same error. I doubt it's an ISP problem.

Same problem here too Jeff ! I had no problems either until the switch and have rebooted, dumped the cache etc !

The DigiChat folks are quick to point out that all is fine on their end. There's little I can say in disagreement. I did get the incompatibility error myself, but dumping the cache and rebooting fixed it. If the incompatible applet problem were on their end then everyone would get it.

My only advice left at this point would be to try a different browser. But, I'll keep digging. I'll also post in the DigiChat Email List.

Getting cached pages from a proxy server at your ISP could cause this very problem.

NetZero gives away five or ten hours of Net time free each month to anyone who registers. Would definitely allow you to try the chat with a different ISP. If that were the problem, they could fix it.

I even loosened up my security. Grrrrrrr How do I download the newer version from after 4-20-01 which ran until 3-31-02? This is not the best chat software I've ever used...

Jeff, I am not sure if this will help, but maybe you could let the page that redirects to the applet loader expire in possible caches with at metatag like

<meta http-equiv="expires" content="fri, 20 oct 2000 03:24:12 +02:00">

use any date you want just not later than yesterday. If the pages are cached properly, they should very well be refreshed then, but i dont know if the applet itself is cached too, but it shouldnt be (i hope). Renaming the redirecting page could perhaps be another idea, but in that case it only solves the problem until next time.

I appreciate your help.

I decided to append the latest version to the name of the chat page. I left the old page out there for anyone who has it bookmarked but updated the link on the main forum page. As the version changes, I'll update the name of the page.

Hopefully, this will work....

Sigh - just tried to log on from the link on the forum home page, and no-go. I didn't really want to chat, anyway - sigh - sniff, sniff - probly no one wanted to chat with me - sniff, sniff. It's okay, Jeff, really it is!

Geeeez, are you guys still getting the same error? The site was down for a while, today. If you're getting the same v3.5/v4.0 problem with the new link then I'm double-stumped. Unless the old applet is being cached and used on the new page.

Anyone try firing up a NetZero session, yet?

Hopefully, I'll get some responses back from the user email list.

I haven't given up, yet!

I'm still getting the same problem, even after the server maintenance.

Jeff - I appreciate all of your hard work on the site, and on getting a chat room up and running. This is getting really frustrating, though. With all due respect, I don't think the members of this site should have to try different ISPs, troubleshoot configurations and so forth. Then again, having access to a chat room is by no means a right, nor are we paying for it. All the same, maybe it's time to look into a different chat provider.

Jeff

I'm really sorry about all the frustration. I'm just as frustrated. We went with the leading chat provider. I was mildly apprehensive about using a Java-based chat program due to these very problems. The problem with HTML-based chat is that it's usually clunky and slow.

I think it's a little premature to throw in the towel, yet. We have a lot invested in this system and fixing the problem would be the best solution.

I still have more avenues to try in getting answers. I'll be investigating them, tonight.

BTW, I'm not suggesting everyone change their ISP. I was hoping someone would try NetZero only to give us more information.
