Everyone should read these recent articles by Michelle Delio on email viruses before they start accusing friends and acquaintances of sending viruses:

Although these viruses do not activate on Macs, I have now received a number of "Failure to deliver.." messages that suggest that somebody has been using my email address to send out viruses.

One day, I received a boatload of such messages, and I'm not virus-infected - I don't use Windows. They were addressed from and to people I don't know.

Thanks for the articles, Wise. Having been through a major 'infection' with Klez, I hope it never happens again!!! You know, when I was looking to buy a computer, I looked at the Macs, and really liked them; got talked out of it by hubbie, tho - almost wished I hadn't let him sway me!

Chuckle, you know, computers are really important to husbands. I don't think that I can stand to have my wife using a computer that I did not understand. Wise.

Alan, knowing you, you probably use Linux, the real he-man OS. Wise.

Actually, I use OS/2, not that my computer literacy is anything to brag about. I was introduced to it by fellow bbs sysops, who had first gotten me into Desqview. Now, all their boards are gone, and they're using Windows. I haven't seen a need yet to join the monopoly, though that day will probably come, if only to be able to use more browser plugins.

Norton's just picked off a "klez" virus from your address, Wise. The subject line was "43 bytes". After digging through all the headers the sender was an AOLer, at least it appears that way, that I've never heard of.

And since I'm the geek in the house I won't let Jay buy computers I don't understand. Although when I get stuck I call one of the wizards at his school. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Of all the viruses, this one really bugs me (pun intended). I am pretty sure that my email address is on a lot of PC computers. A Klez virus on such a computer would pick my address off and send it to other people at random, often with attachments and other things. A lot of people are probably cursing me for sending them a virus. Recently, Jeff was good enough to thank me for an email from me with an attachment that he could not open (probably a Klez virus originated email); I quickly assured him that I did not send it. Worse, a bunch of Klez mail got sent to bum addresses and the mail is bouncing back to me (telling me that postmaster could not deliver). It bums me out to open up my email and find a couple dozen of these email every day. It has been going on for a couple of weeks. I am glad that my Mac cannot send such emails but it bugs me that they have found a way to get to me anyway! Wise.

I think what saves a lot of people who haven't upgraded to WindowsXP is the virus comes as a zip attachment and a lot of people still have problems opening zips. I'm apperantly on quite a few computers too. I got one from a guy I recognized from the Quadlist and I haven't been on it since last October. A couple others have come from universities where I'm on notify lists for certain newsletters. Kind of surprised to see schools that are bugged and don't know it. <swat!>

Speaking of people who deserve chronic pain, virus writers are on the list.
