View Full Version : Avatar feature (picture) by your postings

The new version of the software puts the picture that is in your profile onto the topic posting page below your name. This is called an Avatar feature.
Note that I have the picture size set at 48x48 pixels. This will distort some pictures that are not square. Also, it is too small to really see facial features. You may want to adjust your picture.
However, if you crop your picture so that it is square and also shows mostly your face, it works okay. I just put a picture of myself to illustrate.
If you don't want your picture to show up, you can take the picture url from your profile page (which you can get to through the MyPop link on the top right of the front page).
Please post comments here regarding whether you would like the avatar feature turned on. Also, if you don't have a server somewhere with a URL to place a picture, you have two options.
1. You can attach your picture to a posting. This places the picture on the carecure.atinfopop.com server. If you press CTRL (or whatever the key is on Windows) when clicking the picture, you should be able to open the image into a new window. The URL address of your picture will be at the top of that window. Copy that URL address to your Profile page under picture/avatar line. When you do that, your avatar or picture will appear below your name whenever you post.
2. You can send me your picture and I can put it on the carecure serve. I can also crop the picture to 48 x 48 pixels.
I have set the avatar to 48x48 pixels to minimize the download size of the picture so that it does not slow the site down too much. If all this is too confusing to you, I suggest that you go to the Members Only Forum and Jeff has been very willing to help people get pictures on the server.

I love the Avatar feature!
avatar Pronunciation Key (v-tär)
n.
1)The incarnation of a Hindu deity, especially Vishnu, in human or animal form.
2)An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning.
3)A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing entity: occultism in its present avatar.
I think the name fits! I'd discuss why but I'd rather hear what others feel first. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif LOL
And, yes, if you need help with your pictures please let me know on the forums or in email. I can modify your photo in a number of ways for you if desired or just help you get it in your profile.

I have noticed that many people's avatars are distorted. This because the avatar is square and most of the pictures in the member's pages are not square. When I have the time, I will convert most of smaller pictures to 48x48 pixels on the members page... the big picture that can be obtained by clicking the small picture will remain as is. It is probably a good idea because the members picture page is getting a bit big for rapid downloading and using the avatars would give us room to put more pictures. Wise.

I just turned on the option for people to choose from a selection of standard avatars. This is for people who do not want to put their pictures online. I don't know what you guys think. If you go to your profile (under MyPop link on the top right of the front page of this site), scroll down to the avatar/picture, press the link for editing your avatar. This produces a popup window that will allow you to select an avatar or to put the URL for your own custom avatar (i.e.picture of yourself, or whatever). To see all the available avatars, click here:

To illustrate how you can make your own avatars, I took some of the pictures the members have sent me, cropped them to by 48x48 pixels, and just displayed them. All these avatars are on the carecure.rutgers.edu server and the URL addresses for each picture can be see if you put your arrow over the picture. All that you have to do to get these avatars next to all your postings is to go to your profile (click the MyPop link on the upper right hand side of the front page, click the tab that says Profile, scroll down to the place where you can enter a URL address for avatar/picture, enter the address, click the update button on the bottom).
I also included some examples of funny avatars that I just made in 5 seconds.

Because the picture in the profile is now being used as a avatar, can people adjust their pictures so that they are 48 pixels by 48 pixels. I can do it for you if you want. This is because even though the avatar only shows 48 x 48 pixels, the browser still downloads the entire picture which may be very big. This slows down the viewing of the pages. Thanks.
I just encountered several big pictures and will create avatars out of them and put them on the server so that the original picture is not lost. See http://carecure.rutgers.edu/spinewire/avatars.html.

Clipper,
I was wondering why moderation of attachments was required for your posting until I realized that I had limited this particular forum (the Feedback Forum) to require moderation of file attachments since this is the only forum where people do not need to be registered to post messages. I did not want unregistered users to upload big files to the site. Although I have approved your attachment, please attach files in the Members Only forum where attachments are not moderated and there is no limit to the file sizes (please, however, be circumspect with the sizes of files that you attach since we pay for server storage space).
Please note that the server software displays only .jpg and .gif images. If you want the image to show, convert your file to either of these formats. If it is a single picture, jpg is the best and most efficient format. As Polett has now demonstrated for us with her cute avatar, you can put .gif images that can include moving pictures.
If you put a picture on your profile, try to make the picture square and minimize the size of the picture because that the server will use that picture to produce an avatar to post alongside your name. I have set the avatars on this site to be 48 x 48 pixels. If you put a big image in your profile, that means it will slow down the display of any topic page where your image is shown.
