Can anyone give us information of anyone who suffered a C5 level SCI and still could feel total sensation of nerves beneath the neck level after the accident? My stepson who is 31 had this injury almost 2 seeds ago in a surfing accident. He is still in intensive care. He is able to mose his shoulders and biceps and up, but nothing lower at this time. Does annyone have any knowledge of anyone sho has has similiar injuries, sensations, and loss of movement at theis early stage and has a "success story" of regaining movement under the level of injury? We are encouraged that he has total sensory feeling of his entire body. Does this possibly mean he has a greater liklihood of regaining some/all motor control? Any advice, information, and/or success stories of being a C5 SCI patient and recuperating partial or total use of motor control would be helpful. Any suggestions of what we should be doing to help him have the greatest liklihood of regenerating his damaged nerves to assist in his recovery would be so appreciated. Thank you.

Jan, I am copying your posting to the Care Forum where more people can see and respond to your question. It seems that you did not have trouble registering and therefore should be able to post to all the forums.

In answer to your question, most people who have residual sensations below their injury sight will eventually recover substantial motor function. It may take a year or two.

Please note that this is not true of all people. Some people do not recover much motor function when they have what your . At the present time, we don't understand enough about recovery from spinal cord injury to be able to predict who will or will not recover.

Wise.
