Savi, it is common for people with spinal cord strokes to get some return for up to 2 years after their injury. It is also very common for all people with SCI to have changes in your bladder during the first 1-2 years. Have you had urodynamics since your injury? Can you get them repeated?

It is best not to strain to try to empty your bladder without these tests being done. Straining can cause complications down the road for some people.

Do you have a good SCI physician? Can you discuss this change with him or her?

Savi,

The leaking may be due to bladder spasm (the bladder contracts when it is full). One possibility is that your bladder is full just before you catheterize and it is contracting because it is full. I agree with KLD that you really should be under the care of a physician who can test your bladder to see how much pressure it is exerting and what the cause of the leaking is. If the bladder pressures are high, you may need to take some medication to keep that pressure from going too high. The reason is because when the bladder is contracting and the urine cannot come out, it may go back up the ureters (the tubes that bring the urine from the kidney to the bladder). This is not good for your kidneys. This is a very common problem for people with spinal cord injury.
