I am finally going to get to go home tomorrow and see my friend http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif. Before I leave, I was wondering if anyone had anymore information that I should bring to her mom. I have already printed off the article by Dr. Young about new injuries. If anyone could provide me with any tips or important information I would appriciate it.
Thanks!
Your friend is lucky to have you. The one thing that I remember from those first few scary weeks is the friends and family who came to see me.

I agree, she is lucky to have you. So many people would just be too uncomfortable to deal with the situation head-on like that...just keep remembering that she is STILL the same person. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

If she can't talk yet you might want to take a sheet of paper with the letters of the alphabet printed in large font(hopefully they have already given her one but you never know). This way she can spell out words as you point to them. Frustrating and slow, but sometimes easier than reading lips.

This isnt information, Tammy, but just something that I did. Maybe your friends Mom wont do it or doesnt want to do it, but from day one I kept a journal of everything that happened to Jesse. I dont know if he will ever look at it. He says if he walks he will, otherwise no. I feel the same way, but it was helpful the first two weeks especially. I looked back on it once to see if Jess had the halo before surgery or after surgery because there was discussion about that. And I use it now to follow progress. Just what I did, and I am so glad I have it.

I have a journal of my recovery also, but I have looked at it. It's entries from other people, entries from me, and pictures. I don't regret the fact that I've gone back and looked at it, either...because it reminds me of how far I've come in the last 6 years, especially mentally.

I have a few pictures of Jess with the halo on that we had to take while he was sleeping. He didnt want to have anything to do with that idea. I did, however, get some of him later in rehab and he didnt object at that point, but everyday in ICU, his friends would come to the hospital and record there heys and feelings. Maybe someday he will look.

I wasn't fond of the picture idea at first either, but people weren't taking "no" for an answer...just telling me that one day I'd appreciate it. And I do. Because I look a hell of a lot better now than I did on day three. Heh. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
