View Full Version : Any info?... New Injury
One of my extended family members had an accident Friday. From the info I have her injury level is @ C-6-C-7. Unsure if complete or not. She's 48 yrs old, resides in Maine, and am unsure of her insurance status, but do know she worked full time. She had a "sucessfull" surgery yesterday and is able to move her arms, but little if any hand function. I'm unsure of sensory status or more clear of her motor function. I do know that there are newer medicines and/or procedures out there for a new injury. Being a C-5/C-6, 5 yrs post myself I want to offer her any help I can. With that I know between all of us there's a lot of info available. Any advice/info would be appreciated. Thanks, Tim

You might want to tell them about the Proneuron trials. The surgery must be done within 14 days of injury.
More info on this site if youClick Here (http://carecure.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39756)
The web site for the company is www.proneuron.com (http://www.proneuron.com)

Tim, first, I'm sorry. This shouldn't happen once in a family, let alone twice. As far as info: Read and print the article by Dr. Young, found under the topic Welcome to the Acute Spinal Cord Injuries. (The 1st link)http://carecure.rutgers.edu/spinewire/Articles/AcuteSCI/AcuteSCI.htm Dr. Young has compiled a great deal of info here. Get it to your sister as well as whoever is with her. I would look into the Proneuron thing. Make sure that whoever is with her understands that it is crucial to protect her skin. Start now to expedite the process of getting her into the best rehab you can find. Reassure her that all is not lost. I have a feeling you probably know as much as I do on the subject of sci's, I'm the same level as you, incomplete. Any questions, any time, feel free....Betheny
Thanks Bethany, and I'm sorry if I wasn't very clear. I was quite upset and in a hurry. It's one of my cousins wife's mom. That's what I meant by extended family, but knowing what I do of this injury she could be a stranger. Anyway, thanks again n take care. Tim
I'm sorry to say this post is no longer necessary. Darlene, the woman I spoke of is having complications and isn't expected to make it. They've called all the immediate family in and have Hospice present so I guess that says it all. Thanks again for the replies and thoughts. Take care, Tim

Does she have other injuries? A woman of this age should not be given up on so early after her injury if it is "just" the SCI.

Apparently so... All the info I have is fluid on her lungs which has been drained a couple times, but only to return soon after. She had fallen down the stairs going into her basement and wasn't found until the following day. I believe it was only a concrete slab which she was on throughout the night which I'd assume was cold. I haven't heard anything else today. That's basically all I know.

To my knowledge it was only a concrete slab which surely was cold. I assume this caused her complications, but truly am unsure. I've heard nothing yet today, but will post again if I learn more. Tim
