What level is he?
The most important thing for me when I first got hurt was finding ways of doing aerobic exercise. It strengthens the immune system. The first and most important thing is general overall health. The strength for transfers and other things will come in time. Get on as FEW MEDICATIONS as you can. Depending on his injury level, look for an FES unit, they are cheap.

Is your van equiped with a lift or a ramp? What type of van is it? Does he have wheelchair brake handles that are removable? How wide is his chair (wheel to wheel)? Why is he still using his back brace? Most often people only need to wear their back brace for 3 months post surgery or injury. It is nearly October now. I would assume that his injury is lumbar or thoracic if he is using a back brace. What is he doing to maintain or increase his upper body strength? Is he trying to loose some weight? (KLD)
