Expert in Terri Schiavo case cited for false advertisingTuesday, October 22
Expert testimony in the case of Terri Schiavo wrapped up on Monday.
A neurologist who says there's hope for Terri Schiavo is accused of deceptive advertising.
The Florida Department of Health has filed an administrative complaint against Dr. William Hammesfahr last year. The department accused the doctor of falsely advertising his treatment and exploiting a patient for financial gain.
Dr. Hammesfahr testified in the Schiavo case last week on behalf of the 39-year-old woman's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler.
He said a form of experimental treatment called hyperbaric therapy might improve Terri's condition. She has been in a persistent vegetative state for 12 years.
The Pinellas County woman lapsed into a coma after suffering cardiac arrest in 1990.
Hammesfahr's testimony came under fire Monday.
Dr. Ronald Cranford told a judge that experimental hyperbaric therapy would be a waste of time.
"It's incredibly strange and boggles the imagination that someone could come to believe that after being in a vegetative state for 12 years and say there's any chance of treatment has to be totally bogus," Cranford testified on Monday.
Closing arguments will take place today.
Outside the Pinellas County courtroom, another debate was stirring. Twelve years after Terri collapsed on her apartment floor, her brother, Robert Schindler Jr., believes something else happened that night and he's pointing an accusatory finger at Michael Schiavo.
"I saw Terri the night of the accident and Terri was fine," Schindler Jr. said. "It raises suspicion in my mind and my family's mind about what actually happened that night."
Schindler Jr. stopped short of saying Michael Schiavo intentionally harmed Terri, but the family's expert doctor, Hammesfahr testified the only time he's seen a spinal cord injury in someone in Terri's condition, that person was strangled.
"Nobody knows what happened to Terri that night," Schindler Jr. added. "Only Michael and Terri know what happened and Terri can't speak."
Michael Schiavo says any allegations against him would be a desperate attempt by the Schindlers to keep her alive.
"Number one, he'd better be able to back that up with some evidence," Michael Schiavo said when informed of Schindler Jr.'s statements. "Number two, he was in the home with me and number three they're losing so they're running scared; that's what they're doing now."
Michael Schiavo, wants his wife to die while her family are fighting to keep her alive. The third of five doctors testified that Terri would never be able to recover from the after effects of the cardiac arrest in 1990.
After closing arguments on Tuesday a judge will decide whether Terri's feeding tube should be removed.
That decision is expected to take a couple of weeks.

Even a hundred years later, the outcome is still very much in doubt. .." Outer Limits(Heart's Desire)
