Injuries Spur U.S. 'Total Gym' Machine Recall

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Reports of cuts and abrasions to users are prompting the recall of 310,000 "Total Gym" home workout machines, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (news - web sites) (CPSC).
CPSC and manufacturer Fitness Quest Inc. of Canton, Ohio, "have received about 400 reports of the handles and cables on these exercise machines breaking, resulting in 30 reports of injuries, including lacerations and abrasions," the CPSC reports.
The Total Gym devices consist of a movable glide board set on an incline, which the user lays on and moves upwards using hand cords or by pushing at the base. A detailed photo of the recalled machine is on view at www.cpsc.gov (http://www.cpsc.gov).
Under recall are all Total Gym 1000 and Total Gym Pro exercise machines with serial numbers ranging from DK000001 through DK129350, serial numbers beginning with either XO or SM, or models without serial numbers. Serial numbers can be found on the underside of the machine's glide board.
The exercise machines were sold across the US for between $180-$200 via catalogs, sporting good stores, and Web sites from June 1997 through October 2001. Models sold via television infomercials are not included in the recall.
According to the CPSC, "consumers should stop using these exercisers immediately and contact Fitness Quest (800-321-9236) to order a free repair kit."
