This special issue of NeuroRehabilitation provides cutting-edge information on the debate regarding the withholding or withdrawal of care from persons in VS or the related Minimally Conscious State from medical, religious, ethical and societal perspectives. Includes message from the late Pope John Paul II.

Newswise - In the last few weeks, the long ordeal of Terri Schiavo has come to an end, and more recently, John Paul II, one of the longest reigning Popes in history, has passed away.

Pope John Paul II was outspoken regarding the moral duties of physicians and care-givers related to quality of life, care, and withdrawal/withholding of care. He addressed the participants at an important international conference, "Life Sustaining Treatments in the Vegetative State: Scientific Advances and Ethical Dilemmas," convened in Rome in May 2004.

The "Vegetative State" (VS) is a term that most people have heard, but there is surprising disagreement among medical practitioners, ethicists, clergy and others as to the definition of this condition and the appropriate actions to be taken when faced with a person in this state. There is particular debate regarding the withholding or withdrawal of care from persons in VS or the related Minimally Conscious State (MCS).

An extensive record of lectures and debates from that meeting has been published in a special issue of NeuroRehabilitation: An Interdisciplinary Journal. In addition, the editors have selected other distinguished persons to provide a state-of-the-art overview of VS and MCS.
