High-tech hospitals proposed
Yomiuri Shimbun
The health ministry on Friday proposed that hospitals to be run by joint-stock corporations in special structural reform zones be limited to medical services not covered by the medical insurance system but involving advanced medical technology.
According to the proposal, the ministry will determine the range of high-tech treatments after listening to the opinions of ministry panels. A ministerial ordinance will then be established regarding such treatments.
The ministry defines high-tech treatments as those requiring technologies currently under development. These treatments would include transplants, regenerating nerve cells for patients suffering from spinal-cord injuries and genetic treatment for lung cancer and congenital immunological syndrome.
The ministry plans to approve medical services not intended to treat specific diseases, but those that use state-of-the-art technology.
