My Name is Eddie Canales. My son and I have created Gridiron Heroes Spinal Cord Injury Organization. Our story is under SCI funding fourm, written by David Flores of the San Antonio Express News. My son Chris encourage me to start this support group for football players suffering a SCI while playing for their high school football team. This was after we witness another player suffer a SCI at the Texas State Championship game at the Alamodome this past season. Chris and I spent several visits with the injured football player and his family. Chris suffered a C5-C6 injury November 2,2001. What we have found is there has never been a central location or starting point for coaches to call for immediate support if they have a athlete suffer a SCI. We are only four months in existence and haven't raised a lot of money yet. But we are ready to offer information, inspiration, and hope. We have gained the support of the Texas High School Coaches Association, UIL, all the Division I College Coaches in the State of Texas, Coach Grant Teaff,President of the American Football Coaches Association, and Dave Campbell of The Texas Football Magazine fame. Chris and I have traveled to coaches clinics and conferences to drum up support. Basically getting our name out there. We are now receiveing calls from other states. Coaches requesting us to start something in their states. Please visit our website www.gridironheroes.org (http://www.gridironheroes.org) At present we know of four high school football players suffering a SCI in the past four years. One before Chris and two after Chris. We have become a support group for each other and trying to be prepared to help the next family that might suffer this life changing injury. I will offer more in one of the other forums. I just wanted to introduce ourselves.
