Keep in mind that CARF reaccreditation must occur every 3 years, and if this list is more than a few months old it may be out-dated. More and more centers are dropping this accreditation due to the costs and their inability to continue to meet these high standards.

In addition, now all of the Veterans Affairs 23 SCI Centers are CARF accredited, and some have gone through or are going through their second accreditations.

I no longer place a lot of confidence in CARF accreditation (or many other accreditations). They seem to force Rehab. providers into focusing on getting the right paperwork and the right "answers for a day", but do little to inform the patient of the type or quality of care on a day to day basis.

That is not my perception of CARF after going through CARF surveys. They are much more patient-focused that the JCAHO, and spend a lot more time talking to patients (privately...staff are not allowed in these discussions) as well as front-line staff. They ask the important questions...not the picky unimportant stuff. The CARF standards are full of references to input from patients and families into both program design and evaluation as well as individual planning.

How can I get hold of the criteria for CARF accreditation?

CARF is a US based organization that accredits over 11,000 rehabilitation programs around the world, primarily in North America and Europe. A program that wants to get accredited must purchase the accrediation standards (criteria) books from CARF. They are several hundred pages long, and are several hundred dollars.

The standards cover in detail Leadership aspects such as selection and training and competency of staff, ethics, safety and disaster preparedness, as well as Information Management (data collection about the outcomes of the rehabilitatian process for both individuals and aggregate data), Patient Rights, and clinical standards for the type of program for which accreditation is being sought.
