There was a *very* interesting lecture on Hungarian TV as part of the science series called "All knowledge university". Professor Tamas Roska who is originally an electrical engineer held a lecture about info bionics. He mentioned a case when a monkey got an implant in his brain and without wires (radiowaves) the monkey was able to move a robotic arm by his mindwill.
The lecture also mentioned spinal cord injury and possible solutions, one of them and most interesting is the transconnection using artificial material which can bound living and non-living material and reconnect the nerves by this way. He said that HEAVY development and research is being done. He also mentioned artificial retina for blinds and already existing examples on humans!
He also mentioned that now the electrical engineers and informatics who study this, they also have to study and do study neurology in order to think more complex in the future in order to create and invent better. And this is the first school in Europe where informatic students also study neurology.
Details can be found here (unfortunately only in Hungarian):
