Anyone else addicted? I've been playing Farm Town (http://apps.facebook.com/farmtown/play/?ref=logo) on a daily basis like it's a full-time job. I've met lots of people on their and really enjoy my time playing but I have to admit, it's totally addicting. I find myself putting stuff off or telling people I'm on the phone just so I can get into it more. I'm at the top level and have lots of farms and they keep adding new stuff which keep the game interesting. Okay, show of hands now, who all here is addicted to Facebook games?

I was playing a few and enjoyed it, but I have dial up internet, and the games don't like that. It takes me forever to load stuff. It got to where I could'nt even get the game loaded to play.

Just remember when playing these games you are agreeing to sell your identity.

I'm pretty sure Obama mentioned Farmville in one of these questionnaires. I get people sending me stuff about that game all the time. To me it's no fun because you're the only person who can work on your farm and you don't get to chat with other people while you do it. I don't think I would play Farm Town nearly as much if I can chat with people while I did it. I don't have a job or have anyone depending on me for anything so I think it just feels good to be able to go on their, help someone on their farm and feel a little bit needed if anything just for couple of minutes, even of its just pretend. Besides, I get to throw little bit of my artistic skill out there with my farms, if that's what you want to call it. LOL

It's a good time waster! I play both FV and FT ... send me an add request Ry!
I've been wondering lately how to raise funds for SCI research through stupid games like this - they make MILLIONS believe it or not (for water.org, Haiti, and other charities).

I'm with you! I don't have time & don't play games. I keep telling everyone but I keep getting requests. lol I saw a show about this on the tv show Next World & they explained how the games will keep advancing in reality till people will perfer living thier life in a game online than in reality. You pick an identity in a made up world & you have a life with a home, job, friends, vacations, children, like reality. People play the game constantly and stop really living. I can see people doing it.

so...watching tv is ok, esp. reality shows (yes, i know you didn't say that) and listening to ppl yak about their theories is somehow informative? they've been going on about video games since their inception. don't see the damage. i see much more damage in the tv crap. i don't watch tv, don't even have one, but the things i see online about what's on doesn't encourage me to get one again.
yes, i do a couple of FB games. i have my ipod in my ear listening to a book at the same time. gets me through a lot of pain when i can't sleep. am i addicted? dunno. doubt it. i also chat w/ppl i know but there's only a couple i do so regularly. mainly, my ipod is reading me a book downloaded from audible and i'm trying to get through the pain.

i agree cass. ppl already do this with other venues but videogames get the brunt end of the stick. second life is for ppl who want that alternate universe experience and it came be fun but i do see how it is an escapism of sorts. but anything can be that, really.

I guess we all have our vices and addictions... one is as bad as the other if it takes over you life.
I love to play farmville and did so until my blackberry woke me one morning...one of my neighbors downloaded some program to automatically collect everything on my wall. So when she did that...it was notifying me and at 7 AM on Saturday morning...I got a bit pissed.
I mean what is the point in playing if you are going to get a computer program to play for you...a couple of other friends then followed her.
So I am taking a break from facebook games...plus I got some malware on my computer and I think it came from opening one of those crappy links. I try so hard not to but I think I did and then I had to take my computer in for service.
Anyway...I saw Dr Phil had whole shows on people who are addicted to farmville. I hope I never get that bad LOL

All of this makes Facebook an extremely odd platform for games. On the one hand, it is incredibly successful, generating hundreds of millions of dollars for Zynga alone. On the other hand, it leads to games that couldn't work anywhere else.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/social.media/09/28/farmville.popularity/index.html?iref=allsearch
Zynga, the social gamesmaker behind Farmville, has a revenue run-rate around $600 million, a source close to the company tells us. Another source confirms that Zynga is doing well over $1 million in revenue a day.
http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-monthly-active-users-of-various-widgets-on-facebook-2010-4
If only some of our talented programmers here could get together and make a stupid, yet addicting game - we'd raise lots for research ... and awareness if the main character were in a wheelchair and had obstacles to overcome to reach new levels, etc.

umm, daisy, why would you post things like blackberry num on FB??
Facebook is connected to Blackberry when you download it .. so anything at all goes straight through to your phone. I turn mine on bedside mode at night and use it as my alarm clock (turns everything off and the clock light dims) .. if you forget to do this though, you'll get beeped, buzzed, vibrated (lol) or whatever your sound bite is for messaging!

my number is not posted on facebook but when someone posts something on my wall it rings like a text message to my blackberry.
Well it doesnt anymore LOL
I can go to facebook through my phone just like my computer screen but FB people do not see my phone number
Lynnifer...mine is pretty quiet and I use my alarm clock too although I have to change the tone often or I sleep right through it LOL
well, news to me. my new evo is not automatically connected to FB messages cause i told it not to. something weird here. all these so-called smart phones have the capability to do these things. they're mini computers. doesn't mean you're a slave to these devices.

If anyone can figure it out, let me know! lol
I like getting certain messages from certain people, but there's no way to differentiate between 'notifications' on Facebook for the Blackberry - not that I know of anyway.

it's called push and u can turn that setting on/off either in the phone or in facebook where u can select which notifications can be sent to ur phone. i just use the fb app and have push turned off. sleep is better than notifications

I suggest reading. It occupies the mind as well and you might just learn a thing or two in the process.

I used to play a few games to pass the time. But I found the need to harrass others in order to have enough "friends" to play some games or move on to higher levels to be beyond annoying--both for me and those who would be on the recieving end of the requests. So I decided to quit them all. I don't really get the bitching about being sent requests though (not specifically referring to this thread)...it is easy turn off the requests feature. And less aggravating than repeatedly asking people not to send them.
As for the "value" of these games, I imagine how a person decides to spend their time is up to them. What one person considers a waste of time, like watching TV or planting fake corn, might be very enjoyable to another. I tend to spend a lot of my free time reading, but that is no less of an escape mechanism than when I play something like Sims--it is just a different type. I do have to laugh, however, at those who don't have TVs and feel compelled adopt a superior attitude because of it. I guess whatever floats your boat...

Go into "account settings" and then "notifications" and you can customize what is sent to you through email or your Blackberry. I use the Blackberry app and the only notifications I get on my phone is when somebody writes directly on my wall or sends me a private message, both of which are rare so that is why I left them turned on. I imagine you can probably do this from a Blackberry but I found it easier on a PC.

Well now I didn't officially bitch until I got 32 messages in two minutes at 7 AM on Saturday morning that "Lisa" wrote on my wall 32 times....and I went to my wall and it was her computerized farmer collecting....all my 3AM valentines that I worked hard to harvest the night before. LOL
I thought somebody had died or I had won the lottery....Dammit!!! LOL
Then I blocked "Lisa" and took a three day break and went back to Farmville.
The last straw was when three more friends found the same computerized farmer LOL and you could not just block the one application without blocking all Zynga...so alas I just gave up farmville.
They are all local friends though so I am wondering if they have a "lazy gene" because it still makes no sense in my mind to download a computerized farmer to play a game for me while I am away....
The constant wall posts do get annoying and the "you just collected more pig slop than your friend fred" posts really did annoy me but I finally just stopped slopping my pigs...LOL
My blackberry is quiet otherwise and I like being able to look at things on my phone and post pictures. Most of my pictures come from my blackberry....
Also I don't have anyone on my FB friends list that I would not be comfortable giving my phone number to anyway. Although I wouldn't post it on my wall. If that makes sense....
I have been playing the crossword puzzles lately...hopefully Lisa won't find a computerized player to play that for her too....LOL I like to win occaisionally
i dunno daisy!! lol! never had any of that stuff happen to me...so...i dunno. sorry it happened to you.
