Hello ladies,
Just wondering how you effectively handle your period being in a wheelchair. I am having flap surgery for stage IV ischial wound and my mother will be coming in town for the 12 weeks of bed rest to help out. I don't think I can take care of my female needs while laying on my back. I am considering the ablation procedure but wanted so tips first. Normally I don't have any problems but I see one in my future with the extensive bed rest. Would love to hear suggestions.
Thanks,
Sabrina

I'm AB, but had the uterine ablation two years ago. Fabulous procedure! Virtually no recovery time.
One thing to keep in mind is that while it is not a form of birth control, it basically rules out pregnancy as an option.

I had it done pre SCI and it failed on me, but everyone else I know has had excellent success.
I had a hard time getting it approved by my insurance though even with a year of problems to back up the need.

Thank you ladies for your responses. The trouble seems to be finding someone who can get me in before my flap surgery on January 7th. I would love to not deal with my period on that lengthy bed rest time.

leschinsky- did your insurance company pay for the procedure? I have blue cross blue shield but I'm not sure they will approve it. Do you know how much it cost out of pocket?

I had an ablation procedure a couple years ago - it's so worth it! They were worried about AD and gave me a local anesthetic, but I was completely ok throughout. No regrets here.

My tubes are tied so I haven't had to worry about taking the pill. Did your insurance cover the procedure, Cryptigimp?

yes because I used the magic words heavy period. I believe it would've been pricey because my doc put me under anesthesia and we did it in a outpatient clinic. It would be much cheaper in the docs office.

If they can;t get you in before the surgery, maybe a short term use of birth control pills would be appropriate? Taken steadily, your period wouldn't start.
It is probably a bad idea long term, due to the complications (clots, especially I think) but for the 12 weeks or recuperation, it might be an option.

Were you having bad cramps too? I don't have heavy bleeding, just bad cramps?

For those of you that have had the procedure, How long did it take them to schedule you for the procedure after you had the consultation. I am scheduled for the consultation on Monday the 3rd and I have flap surgery on Friday the 7th. I want to get it done before the flap surgery so I don't have to worry about it after that.

I had my consultation today for the ablation procedure! I'm having it done on Wednesday at noon. Just in time for my flap surgery on Friday! He was a little hesitant about my age but after some light begging he agreed to do the procedure. Thank you ladies for the information.

Awesome! I'll be interested to hear how this works. Though I love my Seasonale I assume there will be future trouble with it long-term.

Good luck! Is he putting you under anesthesia or no?

Good luck! My doctor is backtracking on doing it for me now because I'm 30 and wants to try progesterone pills. They said that the tissue can grow back in 10 years and seemed to say that you can only have an ablation once. (I found posts from women online who said they had done it more than once, but maybe they are mistaken.) I got a blood clot from estrogen birth control pills (Seasonale) but he thinks progesterone will be ok so he wants to try it.
An ablation sounds great to me, so I hope yours turns out really well. :)
