Rotary discusses unique wheelchair

By Ken Aitken, Special to the Midway Driller
There are many wheelchairs in the world, but only one Rotary Wheelchair. Started several years ago one of the Rotary Clubs in Santa Barbara, who saw the need for a chair that was utilitarian, easy to ship to areas of need, easy to maintain. With the help of engineers the design is like but totally unlike any other chair. E. Russell Smith from Santa Barbara brought a chair to the club and told the story of how it developed.

Smith explained to the club how the chair was designed, using what appears like a common lawn chair, white plastic with wheels, a bar across the back for a person to hold and push the chair. The large wheels are 26 the inch size, with bicycle type tires. Many things about the chair were designed for places that do not have streets paved and concrete side walks. There are many places in the world where there is no help for those who are afflicted in one way or another to get from one place to place. The wheelchairs have been the only salvation for those Rotary has been able to reach.

Regular wheelchairs are large and would be hard to ship, but these are made so
