Please explain the 4AP drug. We visit with Guthrie's Physiatrist in two weeks and I would like to mention this drug to him.

I have not seen it recommended for children.

Baclofen is a medication for spasticity.

4-AP is a non-FDA approved compounded drug (you have to find a compounding pharmacy to make it for you once you get the prescription). Its action is to improve nerve transmission. It can, for some people, increase strength and sensation below the level of injury. It can sometimes improve, sometimes worsen spasticity and neuropathic pain. It reduces the seizure threshold, so should not be used for anyone with a history of seizures or brain injury, and it can cause sleeplessness, anxiety and the "jitters" in some. I would be surprised if you were to find a physician willing to prescribe it for anyone but an adult, but perhaps Dr. Young has more information about this.

You can find a lot more about it by using the search function and entering the term '4-AP".
