ND, where do you live and how big is the area? If you don't get much rain, a substance called quarter-minus is good. I live in the desert and did my entire back yard with the stuff. It's a very fine gravel/sand mix that packs down and when it been wet and dried a couple of times, it's really hard... Except when it's wet. I cannot go in my backyard during the 30 days a year it's wet.
If it's small, pavers can be a nice DIY. Concrete can get expensive. If the yard is huge and you just want a small area, how about a small platform out of deck material?

We have a small yard, and have a 2 level deck ... The first level is just off the house (straight roll) then we a added short ramp down to the next level. (It was 2 steps before) Which in turn ramps to the driveway. The ramps we added to make a second exit from the house for me.
I have trouble with the rest of the yard, and was excited when I read Jen's post, as I am planning on adding a path through the yard next .... until I saw
Except when it's wet. I cannot go in my backyard during the 30 days a year it's wet.
Ah, well, I live in New England, that is pretty much my problem in the first place. LOL .:gloomy:

We're thinking about pavers, if they won't shift too much and make for a bumpy ride.
Jen says "I cannot go in my backyard during the 30 days a year it's wet." That would be maybe the 300 days in the year where we are!

Adding this, just for the idea. It is too expensive for me, but is nice to dream about ....

Another way that's even cheaper is to use recycled concrete Dense Gradient Aggregate (DGA). Place about 4" over a decent subsoil and tamp it down. After the first time it gets wet it almost like concrete.

We live in the mid-west so there is a whole lot more rain/wetness than thirty days. So far I have rigged up a path for my s.o. but nothing permanent. I found a company memphis patio furniture would be wheelchair friendly. Something that either would allow the person to sit at the table comfortably (correct height) or perhaps even a glider.

Another thought if you live in an area with lakes is old, used dock sections.

Probably wheelchair with chairlift more helpful on this.
