Has anyone any information on how to use your laptop in Beijing? Do they have a router you can connect up to for internet access? Leaving March 4th and need the info. If you take calling cards do you take International cards?
Thanks

Staying in a hotel then it is possible you would have internet access, though probably a hefty charge to plug in and use. Going to a cyber cafe type places is possible too though again a nice charge to plug in and access their network. Otherwise you would use the phone line like you do in the states and dialup the ISP and login and surf the web. Staying at a friends home or going to someones house while there maybe you can get online from their access point. Using an International phone card is expensive and you would have to check the rates depending on whos card you used. A global cell phone would allow you to use your cell phone for internet access, dail up aol back in the states, but I would imagine the roaming charges would be through the roof unless you added an international plan to your phone right before leaving. This is what my brother did when he went to Italy and England. It was cheaper though to login at the hotel just to check email.

Merco:
We have had quite a few members who have gone to China and from looking at the Cure Forum there are some who are there now, or will be shortly. If your question has not been answered, maybe mom#1 can give you some up-to-date information on Internet access in Beijing. I do recall that Chris (CJO) took his laptop to China and I know he was on a dial-up connection that would be considered rather slow by our standards. I think he wrote that Internet access or Internet connection is inexpensive and DVDs are cheap and plentiful. Good question, and let's see if we can get a more complete answer for you.

Addendum: I just spoke with CJO in the chat room, and if nothing has changed in the hospital, then this is his reply to your question. He used the hospital account, it was a dial-up. It cost $2 U.S. (cheap phone card) for about 2-4 hours.

Hi Merco. When I was in Beijing this is what I used: (originally posted by CJO - *NOTE* - I'm not sure if it'll work the same way from the new location.)
You can buy 20 RMB(about $2.50 US) phone cards at the nurses' station or bigger ones at the Post Office. 20 RMB lasts for at least a couple of hours. You need special phone cards to dial out at the hospital. When you set up the connection, use this info:
Username: 95963
Password: 95963
The phone number you dial follows the info on the card. It's something like:
2012,2,<phone card number followed by the # sign>, <password number followed by the # sign>, 95963#
The commas give you a pause. It'll be like 2012,2,385959606950#,23465#,95963#
