I have Norton antivirus and it tells me that I have protection for everything.
Sometimes I get this thing that pops up from internet explorer that saids that I might have been infected with spyware and it calls it Adware. I have scaned it and some I can't get rid of. Spyware Stormer always pop up when I look up guitartab on the net.
Should I let Spyware Stormer scan my cp?

A good rule of thumb: don't download anything from a pop-up. I recommend that you go to www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) and download their free anti-spyware software. It's the beta version, but it works well. Another good program is Ad-Aware. You can download ad-aware at http://download.cnet.com/ ...try this link and see if it takes you straight to it: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-2

Thanks for the heads up on the new microsoft program... about frikkin' time!
Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'.
I recommend switching over to Firefox or Mozilla instead of using Internet Explorer. You will need Internet Explorer to do your Microsoft Critical Updates, along with things like doing an online virus scan.

I've been using mozilla for 6 months now, but 180search assistant kept on popping up IE windows randomly on me and I didn't know how to get rid of it. I NEVER use IE anymore. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif

That popup is just an advertisement. If you are worried about spyware on your computer I suggest trying spy sweeper (http://www.webroot.com/downloads/) by webroot. It cought alot more than adaware ot norton. That's just what I use.

IE and spyware adware and malware go hand in hand one will always rely on the other. The only way to be 100% spyware free is not use IE. Microsoft has a beta spyware blocker/sanner but if it is on par with other microsoft products it is a waste of hard drive space and resorces. The best spyware removal utility I have found is pestpatrol (http://www.ca.com/products/pestpatrol/)
It costs just over $30.00 for the home version but it is the best 30 dollars spent if you insist on using IE. there are other ways to get it that are fee if you don't care about where your software comes from and no moral hangups.

You probably can tell I am a lay person with cp's. I have never used anything except IE so can't change.
What is adware? I know what spyware is. On my Norton anti-virus it said that it has found 0 infected 7 at risk. It has the file names, threat names two are Adware.Bargain and download adware with five more. Then, action adware found. There was more but the seven won't delete.
Can someone explain adware to this dummy.

Spyware = collects and sends information about your Internet/computer use.
Adware = shows you those annoying pop-up ads
A program can be both spyware and adware. (Gets information on what you're searching for, then displays a related pop-up)
I'm with jplw go get a program called spy sweeper by webroot I have one and you can set it up to scan anytime you want, Just like yourr antivirus. You can't block it but you can delete it from your computer. Also check your firewall setting's, but if you get them to secure you won't be able to pull anything up.

P.s. Download Netscape or something else, Stay away from IE it's terrible!

That microsoft beta antispyware is free and it's good. It pulled 12 pieces off, spybot, adaware and norton only found 3 which they didn't remove.

So far I've found Spybot S&D to be the best, and it's free. Just the other day I ran Adaware, then MS antispyware beta, and then I ran Spybot last. Adaware found 0 items, MS beta found one, and Spybot found 20 something. It had been over 30 days since the last time I ran either of the programs.
Neither MS antispyware or Adaware will scan Mozilla's cookies, so most of the hits Spybot found were cookies in Mozilla. The others were some low risk registry keys left over after uninstalling some programs.

Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.
There is no one program that can remove all the spyware from your PC. I am using SpySweeper by Webroot, and that seems to get about 90% of the spyware. I also use SpyBot S&D along with Internet Cleanup by OnTrack. Just like your Anti-Virus, you need to keep your spyware definitions up to date. I only use Internet Explorer on this website because it works well with Dragon voice rec. I use FireFox and Mozilla, but FireFox seems to work just as fast as IE when surfing the Net. I think 2004 will go down as the Year of Spyware, and this problem will probably get worse before it gets better.

Mary,
You can log on to www.mozilla.org (http://www.mozilla.org) and download Mozilla (the entire suite - browser, mail, chat, et al) or the Firefox browser and Thunderbird mail program. Install what you download, say yes to making it your defauly browser, and use IE only for Windows updates and the few sites that don't render properly in non-IE browsers.

I use 2 programs daily and they are both freebies. Spywaregaurd and Spywareblaster. Sorry, I don't have the links. Just type the names in your search engine. They both notify you before spyware installs itself. I use Xoftspy spyware program (not free) and Firefox.
Jim, thanks.
The link for SpywareBlaster can be found up at the top, under "Useful links and downloads."
Regarding LimeWire: The program may be safe but the files you download could contain viruses and spyware. "Make sure to turn on file extensions in Windows: Open My Computer, click Tools→Options..., press the View tab then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types." Make sure the files you download are .MP3 not .MP3.exe or .AVI not .AVI.exe. With extensions hidden (the Windows default) you can't be sure."
