OK, y'all get to know how stupid I really am. I use the yahoo browser that this machine came with. Fine so far. My son is banned from the computer, but figured out my password and I guess turned on Internet explorer, so he could download games (the butt grrrrr). My computer has been unstable and I'm guessing this is why. I just uninstalled IE and when I tried to post on Carecure, the reply window is in an Internet Explorer box! Plus it wants me to log in every time. My browser has the Yahoo airplane logo, reply box is in microsoft blue and says internet explorer. Also, a lot of ads get through, all in boxes of microsoft blue. Can you help me, keeping it simple? I don't exactly know what a browser DOES, and I was kind of liking it that way LOL. First: Download, install, and run AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.com)

Second: Uninstall the hideous "Yahoo browser" or whatever that is

Third: Install Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/) or Internet Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/ie/)

The "Yahoo browser" is just a tooolbar that Yahoo installs on top of Internet Explorer. I use the "old" (but still being updated) Mozilla browser because it has IMO a better auto-fill feature than Firefox, but either is more secure, and you can turn off those nasty popups. Both are at Mozilla.org.

I have spybot search and destroy, is that like adaware? Every week I run s&d and defrag. Granted, I have no clue why I do these things. Seems like It's because Steven once told me to. Thanks guys.

Spybot works fine Beth.

Yahoo/SBC "imbeds" itself into IE and it's actually hard to remove. If this is what you have and want it removed, let us know and I'll post the steps to get rid of it.

Run Spybot, download Adware, and this: http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/windowwasher/index.php which has a free trial. Multiple ways of "cleaning" is the only way to go to prevent malware.

He downloaded something that hijacks your browser. Yahoo/SBC hijacks you browser as well.

And now, the rest of the story...

I've done what all of you told me to do and can't thank you enough. I got sufficiently obsessed to look up all the mysterious processes, as I mentioned in another post. Since then, I grew even more obsessed and tried to find the source of this infestation. The same word kept arising...Kazaa. The little bastards (referring to my children here) loaded it and hid it. Once I figured out what to look for, it was simple to track down and find that yes indeedy, it was installed on my computer. The more I read the more horrified I am. Kazaa has some really shady backers and they've had control of my machine. My stepson, the oldest, installed it. My younger son is the one with the amazing porn collection courtesy of Kazaa. It started out with hentai. He graduated to real naked women (he's 15, not surprising). Now he has to start over.http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Obviously, 2 kids in Oklahoma are going to become re-acquainted with pencil and paper.

I got the Mozilla, but can't play Yahoo games on it and I'm a Literati addict. Kap says I switch browsers like I'm switching trains.

The only process running now that bugs me is saap.exe and P2P networking. The saap thing is really greedy. At this moment it is using 42,736 K. Not that it hurts anything, I'm still only using 10% CPU, it just makes me mad because I don't think it's supposed to be there.
