Nothing the "average" user would have a problem with. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I'm kind of picky with my computer. I don't like to have anything on automatic, I like to be in control. I run the bare minimum services required, and have no startup items. I manually update everything myself, I like to know what goes on.
After installing SP2, I chose not to turn on automatic updates when it asked, turned off the new security center service (it was annoying) and the firewall (because I have a hardware firewall).
I then went to windowsupdate, it's different after installing SP2, and I get this instead:
Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is disabled.
Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting. To ensure that these services are enabled
Event Log is already on automatic and running, but I did have BITS and automatic update disabled. I go to the services in control panel and place the automatic update service and BITS in manual, and then manually start them. I go back to windowsupdate and it still tells me it thing. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif
After messing with it, I find that BITS can be left in manual and not running, but it's not enough that you manually start automatic update, it must be in automatic and running or it wont let you go to windowsupdate. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Thus, why I did not choose to update when you posted this. If you read the 100 or so releases that Microsuk put out for this, it hits on the move toward "automation".
It is in my opinion that SP2 is not for the power user, but for the "everyday joe" that does not like to control and tweak every aspect of Windows.

You can still disable automatic updates, but for some supid reason the service still has to be set to automatic.
I just did some more messing with it, and it seems WindowsUpdate only checks to see that the service is set to automatic, it doesn't check if it's actually running. I set the service to automatic, stopped it, then went to WindowsUpdate and it worked. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I check for updates from time to time. But, how do I set it to check automatically? It may be painfully obvious. But, I can't seem to find where to set it as automatic. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif

Amanda,
click on START, then CONTROL PANEL.
Select "System" and from the box that pops up, click on the "Automatic Updates" tab.
You can then select how you want windows to update.
Hope thats what you meant.

Jim,
But what you are doing is too complicated for the "average joe" user. And it should not be that difficult for the power user, but one hears arguments on both sides, hence why the release of SP2.
