Matt:
Windows Internet Explorer is a flawed browser and you would be better off using Mozilla or Firefox. You do need Internet Explorer to do your Windows Critical Updates and some sites such as, Trend Micro because it requires Active X.

Was it Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) or Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) that had an error? It would be a little more helpful if you gave us the exact error. If it does it again, write it down.

The strange thing is I was not even on line and I get "internet explorer has caused an error" - so I created a boot disk and did a "scandisk/all/surface" - it has worked better today only crashed once - last night I went into the control panel to disable explore but it would not let me change it - I have heard of Mozilla but know nothing about it. Do I nedd to run a "scanreg/restore?" - I have tried to restore this computer as far back as I can.
Thanks,
Matt http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Are you sure it's saying Internet Explorer, because if it's Windows Explorer, it has nothing to do with the internet.

Hunker:
Windows Millennium Edition is not as stable as a Windows XP. I don't think you need to do anything with the registry or turn your PC back to a different time using the system restore feature. You tried to disable Internet Explorer?

Paul I tried to restore as far back as possible and I tried to disable Explorer and it would not let me, it froze and I had to reboot. I have noticed that ME is an upgrade from 95 and 98 WIN so my question is get XP upgrade to fix?
Hunker:
If the process is 800MHz or faster and you have 512MB of RAM, then upgrade to Windows XP. Windows 2000 may be worth considering and it is built on NTFS instead of Fat32.

Matt,
If you get XP, buy the full version. Update versions are obscenely horrible.
Do you have the Active Desktop turned on or not? ...and what version of IE are you using?

The upgrade version can work like the full version. You can still format and install fresh, but during the install you'll be asked to insert a previous version of Windows CD in your drive to verify that you qualify for the upgrade.
If I remember, you bought your system from a pawn shop and didn't get a CD though. Are you needing a new HD or video card? You can get an OEM disk alot cheaper, but they aren't supposed to sell them unless you buy hardware.
It definately sounds like it's time to format that sucker and start fresh.

Thanks everyone I made a boot disk, went to safe mode and did a surface scan. Oh well, I still can burn and learn on it so I'll go to my other computer which is XP and do my on line stuff. BTW I really enjoy this forum and read it daily.

Hunker, have you been to the windows update site and installed the latest critical updates? If you have you should have IE 6. If you go to control panel, add remove programs, find IE 6 and click to remove it. A new window will pop up and ask for further instructions-the one to click would be the one that offers to repair IE 6. When it is finished you must reboot. Hope it works.

Technically you can't uninstall IE from Windows. When you uninstall it from the ARP all it does is remove the icons and unset it as your default browser. You need IE for windowsupdate.com.

Maybe so jimnms, but I was not suggesting uninstall-there is a repair feature.

It has been a while but I remember if you go to, "add or remove programs" and then select remove Internet explorer, there is a feature that will try to repair it. I don't think you can actually remove Internet Explorer.
