Hello All,

I'm trying to find a software application that allows me to obtain complete control of my telephone through the computer and microphone. I would love to hear any suggestions or experiences.

Thanks

I believe there are a number of plans that will allow you to make telephone calls through your PC. This is an emerging trend and the phone companies will be offering their plans to try to get your business.

I use Yahoo Instant Messenger and Polycom ViaVideo for video conferencing and it is free. If you choose to go with another telephone service that is over the Internet, find out if there are any issues with dialing 911 or local calls. I'll turn this over to one of our members who is already using this service. Welcome to CareCure.

Thanks for the response Paul.

While the links you provided are definitely something I'll look into. I am also interested in software that will allow me to plug my phone line into the computer and dial, answer, hang up, etc. with my mouse and use my headset with earphones to talk. Do you know of anything like that?

Thanks again,

MightyHawg , I'm a computer idiot , but have been hearing a bit about VoIP [ Voice over IP ] lately , and would be interested to hear from our onsite computer gurus about it . A report I saw on a Current Affairs show was of the opinion that it will be the way of the future for voice telecommunication . Firefly seems to be the common one at the moment , but if you Google '' VoIP '' I'm sure you would find more info . Here are 2 links to Firefly I found .

I have the software on one of my computers but I have never used it to make telephone calls. I have seen Skype being used and it seems to work OK.

Hawg, I know what you're talking about; I used to have a program which was simply a phone emulator (not VOIP). You could dial out and receive calls over your regular phone line using a modem, mic & speakers. It could store numbers and do most other basic phone functions like mute, etc. It came installed on an old pc which I no longer have and I don't remember it's name. Very handy little program. I have done a search since and couldn't find a similar one, though. I'd also love to know if anyone else runs across this.

My computer came with a software program called "Phone Dialer." It has a speed dial feature and it allows you to store phone numbers. It also has the touchtone pad so you are actually dialing a phone number.

I use Yahoo but found the mic clearity was bad from my xp @ home and work (my wife could hear me but I could not hear her?) + we both have to have Yahoo to talk. I have a dial up at home and DSL @ work, would that make a difference? These other software programs look to charge $. This looks like a fun project for me @ work today. I will see if I can crash a computer. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif
