Do I need to spend money?

In most cases, yes, a few bucks. Yahoo has one of the best rated for personal use.

some will tell you that you can host your own, not always a good idea, but others here may have a better idea.

You need to spend money if you don't want advertisements. I started a site http://www.chris-olson.com a few months ago.

Yahoo is good, but I wanted to use a certain scripting language so I went with a different host. It will probably cost you $8-9 per month (if you want your own domain name), plus a small setup fee, and domain name registration.

I think Geocites, Freeservers, or MSNusers will give you free space, but there will be banners.

Alot of times you iSP, internet service provider, supplies space on your account to host small wedsites.

which wouldn't cost you anything extra. check with your ISP to see if they have this.

Geocities.com is another good place to host a free site

You can get a domain name pretty cheap these days. Hosting could be done at home with a dynamic redirect, but that seems pretty iffy. I sort of like BestLittleHost (http://www.bestlittlehost.com) since you get to play with PHP and MySQL if you want to. The MySQL is still something I'm learning. But I like the PHP ... thusfar.

Easy on the Lingo. I'm sure Liz is a smart lady, but she asked one basic question, wait on the crazy lingo till she asks another question. We dont want to discourage her.

Liz,
Raven is one to ask also.

Mingo, I'm a hardware guy, I am still a noOb to the area of web design, actually it bores me. I like to tweak, I like speed, and I like to crash my WinXP pro as often as possible. Heck, I recently crashed Linux, and proud of it.

I hear ya, its a stable platform. Hosting at Best Little Host is on Linux or Windows. I use the Linux, not that you can tell by looking. At $5.95 its a deal. I assume you are crashing a home Linux installation. I keep wanting to do that on an old Pentium I have stored. One day ... one day ... http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Liz321,
You might want to try my son's hosting you on his site. He will not have any pop-ups or advertisements on your pages. I talked to him and he said he would host you if you want. He said he won't charge you. He hosted me for a while and helped me to register for my domain name which only cost me $12.

If you need more information, you can email me or post it here for me. I will be happy to help you with whatever I can. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Comcast gives a free 25MB with their Internet service. I do not care about the domain name so all was free.

Heee Heee Mingo, no I crashed it after the initial instal. I opened YaST and wanted to change from KDE to Grub, just to try, it became pissed at me, and crashed. Now in trying to re-install, it wants to crash each time.

Brian has the simplest answer. Your ISP likely gives you enough space for something basic. If you want a domain, register a name through www.godaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com) (< $10/yr) and then point it to the address your ISP gives you.
