I opened up my ME 2000 and saw only two RAM slots. Can I put a higher card in there to increase the RAM over 256 or am stuck?
Thank you,
Matt

Yes you can replace the exhisting RAM with higher rated MB. You need to know what type of RAM, the bus speed, and I doubt it is registered, but might want to check. RAM should be matched, meaning what you put in slot 1 (brand, size, and clock) you need to put in slot 2. Most MoBos are picky today. Most RAM is DRAM, but if a Pentium, it may be RAMBUS.

So, it would be best to take the card out and take it to the store with me and get two more that are higher? http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif

Check BIOS for bus speed first, and timing if needed. Then wheel on into CompUSA with you modules and get bigger ones http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif.

As long as you don't get some cheap nonamebrand RAM, you shouldn't run into problems mixing brands. If you already have 256MB, you can just buy another stick of 256 to put in there for a total of 512. Or you can buy a 512MB stick and go for 768MB total.

Matt, is this a P4 or AMD XP machine? If so, mixing RAM can cause problems. If it is a "dual channel" motherboard, it will not function unless the memory is 'paired'. Jim's advice works for older machines and you may get away with it on a newer machine. If you follow his advice, place the older RAM in slot 2 and the newer in slot one. Because your newer RAM is likely to have a better latency than the older RAM, you want it recognized first.

I have an AMD ME - When I can I will take a card out and go to COMPUSA and get two higher RAM cards. I am running 256 so I hope to RAM it to 512, right?
Thanx,
Matt

I should have asked sooner, when you opened the case and saw the two slots, were they both filled? If not, you should be safe with buying another 256 and putting the new in slot 1 and moving the older one to slot two. You still need to know the bus speed (through your BIOS) before purchasing RAM.

When I said AMD XP, that is the type of chip, not the OS that it's running http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif.

When I opened the case it was filled with DUST! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif I cleaned the dust out and sent it to be tested http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif Yes, both slots we filled and I will check the BUS speed when I get home(I bought this thing at a pawn shop for $300) Whoever had it before me must have liked Big Booty because I can not get it off some files. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif Both slot are filled with 128 each.BTW,
Thanx,

Ah, so it only has two slots and both were filled with sticks of 128MB, so you did good getting two 256MB sticks.

Did it come with a Windows CD, I'd suggest formatting and doing a fresh install. No telling what the person who owned it before had on it.

If you are running Windows Me, you will only noticed a small increase in performance from 256MB to 512MB.

No it did not come with a Windows CD (this pawn shops do not have them)I wonder if I would be better off $ wise by upgrading to XP PRO Then I could do a fresh install? I think my processor is 233 but I may be thinking of some other computer. Are ya'll like me I babysit five different computers during the day, then my son and I have computers and computer parts everywhere, floppys, cd's? Hey Booster you must be younger than me - when you an old man we have to stay in shape for the ladies, also low carb is much better for my keyboards than a heavy lager. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Thanx everyone,
Matt

If you ordered the RAM from an online place like NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com) you could have gotten the an OEM disk of WinXP. The OEM disk is the full version of Windows, but it costs alot less than the upgrade version you buy at retail stores.

Unless you plan on setting permissions for individual files or folders, stick with XP Home.

YEs, by all means upgrade to XP Pro, if this computer is worth keeping. What speed is the processor? And if you do upgrade to 512, you will notice a difference in XP Pro, do to the way it manages memory.

Win ME used a program callen memeroy manager, wich was crap. It would not release memory, caused freeze ups, and performance sucked.

Hunker, how old is your pc,what do you use your pc for.Parts for building a pc are really cheap so if you have a pc thats a year or two old I would think about building a new one if you can afford it.I built a xp2800,Delta Force mother board and 2 sticks of 512 pc3200/400mhz memory really cheap.something to think about. My son is upgrading his now. So the he spends more time on newegg and ebay(He will be the hardware guy, I'm from the old school of Lotus)My work keeps me on computers. I'm known as "computer dangerous" I can crash them in a minute but after awhile it kind of fun. Thanks for the info.
