View Full Version : Question about Yahoo

It just happened again.
I spend a lot of time on "invisible" on yahoo. I wouldn't get anything done at home if I didn't. However, several times, while invisible--once even in the middle of a chat--I suddenly get a message that I've been logged out because "I've" signed in on another computer. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif It's usually this time of day too.
What's going on? With all the other nonsense going on in the forum, I don't know what to think. Is someone sending Yahoo messages under my ID? Or is this person able to spy on my conversations?

Martha,
I don't believe anyone can spy on your conversations unless of course they have access to your yahoo password. I have heard of other people having same problem as you I will ask around and see if they have solved it yet.

Martha, If someone knows your password they can sign in as you anywhere. That sounds like whats going on, if your on messenger and they are on their computer and they sign in as you thats what would happen

If someone knew how to navigate on this forum well enough, could they find my password? It's same for CC as it is for Yahoo ... but it's about to change!

im not sure about that but im sure its possible, if I were you I would change both passwords and see what happens

To make your password more difficult to crack, use numbers, letters, uppercase, lowercase and add in a ; or :.

Martha,
I think this is a problem with Yahoo. The only time it happens to me is if I disconnect and immediately reconnect. Yahoo doesn't think you disconnected from your previous session, so once you log back on it thinks you're logged in twice.

Do you have Yahho on another computer? Sometimes if you have an auto launch of Yahoo on a different computer you can get booted. We have 3 computers in the house all with IM downloads with auto launch. My husband knows when one of the kids boots up the computer because he will be bounced off. This happens for MSN, Yahoo and AOL.

Kevin, this happens (usually) when I'm invisible and have been logged on for a while, sometimes for a long period of inactivity or once in the middle of a chat. It's never happened when I've disconnected and then immediately reconnected. Don't even think I've done that before.
Cheesecake, my Yahoo account is on my one computer at home. The only time I've used my Yahoo account on another computer was at my sister's while in Houston, but this started happening long before that visit. I suppose I could call her and find out if they've fiddled with it at all, but she has her own yahoo account. Thanks, though, for the input. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Maybe I'm paranoid because I've been cyber-stalked in the past. If it has been someone "listening in" on chats, I'm afraid they've been pretty disappointed. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

One other point I forgot to make initially: Roughly six weeks ago a member of CareCure, who's ID I recognized but had never interacted with, Yahoo'd me asking, "wanna chat?"
I replied, "who are you?" or something like that. This person never responded and has never contacted me again to chat. I checked the profile but when I tried to read this member's past posts, I couldn't access them.
About an hour or two later, while in the middle of chat, there was suddenly a message that I'd logged off! The poor person I was chatting with was sharing a painful personal issue and thought I'd logged off in the middle of our chat! Then my account seemed to automatically sign in again.
It gave me a creepy feeling. Maybe there's no connection, but I thought I'd share this too.

Do you have a firewall on your home computer? Do your children use this computer and if so do they chat on Yahoo?
Also, as sugested change passwords, that is always important when somrthing suspicious happens. Change every password you have, rotate through 4 or 5 different passwords every 4-5 months.

Hey Marco,
Change your password to something random and see if it happens again.

Steven, since changing the password a couple of days ago, it hasn't happened again.
Booster, I DID have a Lynxus router, but last Feb I was having problems and had to disconnect it. One of my computer geek brothers had gotten me set up with it initially and we've all forgotten the password, didn't write it down ... I know http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
I need to call Bellsouth about getting it reconnected etc. However, it was months before my a lot of crap began showing up on my Adaware scans. Right now I'm averaging about 75-100 files every day on my Adaware runs. Sometimes I run it more than once a day, just to make sure.
I feel exposed more than ever without that firewall.
The children are not allowed to chat or surf internet without me in the room. They are limited to their computer games.

Marco, this firewall is free and Steve Gibson of GRC said some good things about it the other week.

There's a reset button on the router that will reset it back to factory defaults (no password). You have to use a pen or something small to push and hold the button down for 6 seconds I think, then it will reboot and be restored to factory defaults.

Jim, we tried that so many times. I don't know what the problem is. That's why I have to call Bellsouth ... ugh http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif

Bellsouth isn't going to help you with a Linksys router, they barely give a crap about supporting their own phone lines.
Here (http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=602&p_created=1084218077&p_sid=kpUiTuhh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9Mjc5JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9c2VhcmNoX25sJnB fcHJvZF9sdmwxPSZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMj0mcF9jYXRfbHZsMT0mc F9jYXRfbHZsMj0mcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1yZXN ldCBwYXNzd29yZA**&p_li=) are the instructions on how to reset the Linksys router. It says you have to hold it for 30 seconds.

Marth,
If you have the time, send me the model number of your router. I will post instructions on how to set it for maximum security. Then if you have a software firewall, or enable Windows firewall (I know it's not great, but offers some protection) you will be protected. You will likely have to update your router (they released a blanket update in April, and a limited one in June). You will be protected. It is likely, because of the port Yahoo uses, that you either had a worm or someone 'tunneled' through using yahoo. I will find the article regarding Yahoo's vulnability to these attacks.
There is a great client (for chat) that will comunicate using Yahoo's protocol, ICQ's protocol, MSN's protocol, etc. in a secure fashion. I will find the link to it, they have a 'lite' version that is free.
Security has become my 'hot topic' being the victim of a cyber stalker, and a trojan. I have not been attacked in three years now, minus one attempt in which my firewall clamped down all ports, and I was safe.

Booster: Can you post and provide a link regarding the article about Yahoo's vulnerabilities with its Instant Messenger? Would the alternative to Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc. be Trillian?

Paul, that is the December alert, I am looking for the April alert in which there was an exploit.
And yea it is Trillian, the basic: http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/downloads/
Most firewalls work well with it.

The latest is now I'm having trouble signing onto Yahoo, but when I do (after some tricky maneuvering) I can't chat. I type my words but they won't post on the scroll. When the other party types, I can't see their words.
I'm going to dump it and get my computer cleaned up. Funny thing is, dumping Yahoo may be the best move I've made in a long time. I'll decide later if I want to get back on it.

When I dumped SBC/Yahoo and went cable, I felt the weight of the world lift off my shoulders. I have the cable (internet only) and cell phone bills, no more SBC, YEA!

Right there with you booster. Seems like lots of things have changed for better once we got the cable connection!
