I need a good printer to print my digital camera photos. Any suggestions?

What are you looking for in a printer? There's lots of options. Do you want inkjet or dye-sublimation? Do you want something that connects to your computer, or one where you can print directly from the camera? Portable, or not? http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif

A friend of mine has two photo printers. I don't know the model numbers, but one is an HP and the other is a Canon, both are Inkjet. The Canon looks better, but only if you use the expensive Canon paper. The HP is a little less quality, but he uses it more because paper is cheaper for it.

I don't print many of my photos, so I just use the 1hr service at Wal-Mart (not the Kodak inkjet thing). It goes through a different process, it's not inkjet and I think it looks alot better. We did the math and I don't remember the exact numbers, but we found it cheaper to do the 1hr thing at walmart. It costs 24 cents for a 4x6 print. You can also upload them to their online service and pick them up in the store or have them sent to you.

Yes, I want an ink-jet printer that connects to my computer. I must print out our local school group's newsletter monthly (about 50 pages per month) and I make my family photo calenders for Christmas presents. I make about 7 -12 month photo calenders. I was looking at a 4800-1200dpi Canon printer at Circuit City for $149. Says it prints up to 16 color sheets per minute.

Canon is alright but has a high operating cost. Lexmanrk has the highest operating cost for mainstream inkjet. If that is what you are doing, go for the first link I posted. Easy to find, longlasting cartriges. I have the modle prior to this one and love it. It will last.

With the two sided automatic cartrige. You can print on both sides of the paper automatically. Saves paper. And I can't say enough good things about it.

It depends what you intend to do with the prints, how large you want to print, and what your budget is.

Inkjets are getting VERY good these days. My suggestion is to stay away from dye-subs unless you want to shell out a minimum of $800. You'll get better print quality from a budget inkjet vs. a budget dye-sub.

From my experience, the current Epson & HP inkjet photo printers are at the top. Canon is close behind. IMO, forget the rest. AND, don't worry about dpi ratings. You won't be able to tell any difference with current models.

I use a HP Photosmart 7960, and the prints are incredible. I bought this one over an Epson b/c I wanted one I could use for everyday stuff too. The Epson I was considering would be dedicated to photos only b/c of the inks. That being said, I use a pro lab for most of my work. In-house printing can get pricey if you do a lot. But, the printers are good enough these days... I paid half of mine off (when I bought it, it was $300) by selling seven 8.5x11" sheets (w/ 2x 5x7s on each) from it. It's that good.

However, to maximize any photo printer's potential, you should use the recommended paper for each.

What camera are you using? Do you do any digital post-processing?

My suggestion: get one of your favorite photos, put it on your memory card, and take the card over to someplace like Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, etc... and get them to print you samples from the printers you're considering. Pick what looks best to you for what you're willing to pay.

Thanks you guys for all the info! I knew I came to the right place for help! I really, really like the Canon, but I'm going to think about it this weekend and decide. I'm as cheap as they come, so price is a major deal. Thanks Paul for the Amazon link...it is an I960 for the same price as CC's I860. Is the 960 a newer version?

Shannon, I honestly do not know if the 960 is a newer version. However, it is a safe bet that the I960 is a step up from the I860. Good luck!
