View Full Version : window's XP
I'm not real familiar yet with XP. Could someone tell me how you delete your cache and temp internet file's?
everytime I do my antivirus scan it just scans and scans, those and I thought I had them deleted. I know it is slowing my computer down and where I live the connection takes forever anyway to do anything. And I would like to try and speed it up a little. Defragging helps a little but I know that if I can find them it will help alot more.
Thank's

Go to "System Tools" and select "Disk Cleanup." I don't want to confuse you but you can set up Windows XP "classic start menu." Just right-click on start, left click on "properties" go to the "Start Menu Tab" and select "Classic Start Menu."

Duge, right click on Internet Explorer and then left click on properties. In the General Tab, you can delete your temporary Internet files and clear year history. I have always deleted my cache using a software program that I purchased from Ontrack.

Cleaning the cashe is important, since IE is funny about not cleaning up after itself. If you are interested in an after market product, this is the best: http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/windowwasher/index.php?rc=648&ac=adw17ww
I agree with booster and this program has a 30 day free trial. I have also heard very reports about Spy Sweeper as well.
Spy Sweeper (http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/spysweeper/index.php)

Koran Verse 9 : 11
-- For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome
Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of
Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair, still more
rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and
there was peace.

I'm probably sounding like a broken record, but ditch IE and install Mozilla or Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org).

It has been my mantra as well for about the past three weeks. Internet Explorer has flaws that can leave you vulnerable to malicious codes. I'm still waiting for Microsoft to fix this problem.

Ok guy's
I already have the spysweeper and it is amazing at what you find in your computer. One said my modem had been hijacked from a Japenese dialer, and could make call's using my Ph# so I called the phone comp and had a Block put on all oversea's calls. That could have really cost a person!
Now I Bought the Window Washer last night. Could any one give me any insight's on how to use it so I won't loose site's like this when you run it?
I bebleive it will speed me back up! It say's that anyway
Thanks

You can set it not to delete cookies, which is where your passwords are. Everything else should stay default on WinWasher.
If you go Mozilla as we preach, the passwords are saved in a different manor and you wont have quite that problem. Win Washer has extensions to clean Mozilla too, but Mozilla actually does a good job at cleaning itself.
Winwasher, this: http://www.executive.com/defrag/defrag.aspand Spy sweeper are the only utilities besides ZoneAlare 5.0 suite that I recomend. Otherwise you can have way to many utilities and actually slow your computer down.

OH!!!
On Win washer they have a Cookie wiz. I forgot about thishttp://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
Set the cookies you want it to remember for entry.. and it will leave them be.
Any other help needed, let me know...

I do think highly of Webroot and these two software programs.
I have run both Spy-Bot and Adware; then I use Spy Sweeper and it finds stuff that Spy-Bot and Adware missed. It is OK to use
both Spy-Bot and Adware along with Spy Sweeper, if you want to.
I find Spy Sweeper easier to use. I have not tried Win Washer but I have heard good things about this program and I plan on using it shortly.

I also have adaware and Spysweeper, plus I ran the window washer today for the first time. From What I have seen of it already I am sold on it! It really sped me back up. You do have to make sure you keep the cookies you want I really don't understand all that it does yet but I'm learning.
Thanks
Doug
I had loaded some music from cd's to my music match jukebox and it deleted them. I got to learn how to get it not to do that. I love listening to music when I'm on here

Have you tried scandisk in safe mode? http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

A scan disk and disk clean up in safe mode still will not clean up some of the scars on your reg that tracking cookies can leave. Unfortunately Windows almost requires users to have third party software to rid Windows of 'shit' like tracking cookies.
By cleaning the reg of this stuff, it speeds Windows up. By cleaning IE, it speeds browsing. By cleaning spy ware, it makes browsing a bit safer.
