What's everyone's take?

I think in general it will be good. Because of this, Yahoo's free email will be adding 25 times more storage. Hotmail will
probably follow this trend. I believe Gmail is still in Beta and I do not recall if it comes with ads.

It'll be good. It does come with ads, and they may be able to work it out so that it helps their search results by either penalizing sites linked to in messages that are "reported as spam". Better search results are a good thing. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Competition is the only good thing to come out of it. Yahoo just upped their free email to 100MB, Hotmail announced today they will offer 250MB for their free service.
I wont be using Gmail though, I don't like the idea of it scanning my messages to deliver ads based on the content of the message.

I got an account last week and I must say that I really do like it. The interface is really easy and makes sense. I also like how it groups all e-mails related together (original, replies etc.). The ability to filter and search is by far one of its greatest features.
I will certainly continue to use it.
I know 1GB sounds like a lot, but realistically people will still run out of space if they keep their e-mails. But as mentioned earlier, Gmail is definitely good for competition. That I think everyone can agree on.
