The Screen Savers - Friday, November 15, 2003

By Yoshi DeHerrera

The Mach I is a wonderful system that cools the CPU down to minus 10 degrees Celsius at idle. To make sure the Mach I was up to the task, I left the system running at 100 percent CPU load for three days straight. The temperature stayed at a chilly 4 degrees Celsius and didn't fluctuate at all. By comparison, the stock air cooling unit on my CPU running at 3.2 GHz had a temperature of about 50 degrees Celsius under full load. The CPU won't run at 4 GHz with air cooling.

I was able to overclock the CPU to 4.3 GHz, but the chip was unstable. Four GHz is good enough for me.

is it such a significant change that you can actualy see it in the performance of the machine?

"Processors read the information you instruct the Computer to perform. The faster the processors the faster the information is read and acted upon." However, in this case going from a Pentium 3.2GHz to a Pentium 4.0GHz, the majority of us with the software that we are running, I don't believe we will see or notice any difference in performance. Also, when I watched this episode of the Screen Savers, they did not do a demonstration of this PC running at 4GHz before or after.

Overclocking is common with hard core gamers, and those that just want to do it because they can. I've overclocked before, but not to the point where I have to start adding water cooling and stuff.

I don't overclock until I find a game that my system has trouble with. My last computer was a P3 933. I only went from 933MHz up to 1.1GHz. It made a slight difference, I did take it faster, but would overheat and become unstable. I could have invested in better cooling, but why not put that towards a new faster computer instead.

I've now got a P4 2.66HGz, I'm not overclocking yet, because I can run all my games on max detail, except FS 2004. I may overclock it a little, or sell it while it's still worth something and upgrade to a 3.2Ghz with 800MHz FSB.

Wonder how much water condensed in that thing?
And can one "see" an increase of 600 mhz? What if the data access time ramains the same?
I bet unless one increases the speed of the entire machine, (ram, busses, video, etc) no real world increase will be noticable.
