BELEAGUERED Internet service provider Telstra BigPond was attempting to restore thousands of its customers' websites yesterday after most were deleted in a technical fault on Tuesday.
The problem comes as the company struggles to handle a sudden increase in the volume of e-mail which has delayed messages to many customers by up to 10 days.
BigPond spokesman Stuart Gray said most websites were deleted early Tuesday when a corrupted computer server was rebooted, losing the information.
Mr Gray said technicians were restoring the information from a back-up made on Saturday, but the websites of most dial-up customers would not be restored until today.
"It deleted the great majority of websites," Mr Gray said.
"There are a few hundred that weren't affected."
The deletions come as BigPond customers continue to experience delays in receiving e-mails.
The volume of e-mail in Australia surged last week, increasing by 20 per cent, a Telstra spokeswoman said.
BigPond had been unable to cope with the increased workload, which increased from 8.5 million to 13 million e-mails each day, leading to long delays.
Some customers have reported waiting 10 days to receive e-mail, as the current problem combined with another BigPond e-mail fault.
The company said technicians were working to increase the network's capability, but the problem may not be solved for several weeks.
