Hi,

I have a laptop running Windows XP. I cannot decide how to split off of drive C and make another drive. I think it is called a partitioning (spelling). Anyways, it just has the one drive (Storage Space). I have a habit of sometimes installing a dull program or I may delete a wrong file, etc...

I usually test out programs on a drive that is not too important in the start up mode. Not the main directory (Chttp://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Only has one C drive currently!

Be not afraid, grasshopper.
I would use the "system restore" feature, building a restore point, then installing your new program. Then you can "roll back" to the previous OS configuration if needed.
Or, do your partition thing, if you wish. [edited]

Hey, http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Is there a way to partition the hard drive using the operating system that came with the computer without having to install additional software?

No, but you can buy Partition Magic and it will do it for you. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

It is my understanding that, if you want to partition your drive without losing any data, or, in other words, create a non-destructive partition, then you will want to use Partition Magic.
