Hi Again Ya'll
It seems that I am facing Goliath as I try to figure out the way to get my web pages on the internet.
I just read that the way to start out is with FTP. Does this term mean - File Transfer Protocol - also how does this relate with communicating by the internet? Any thing important to remember!!!!!!!
I will leave off here and then maybe progress further on down the road.
God Bless America,
David

You can do 'browser upload' but that's rather clunky. FTP is much better.
Then there's some windows based contraption, front page or something, but I haven't used it.
WS_FTP 8 is available here: www.sling.to/fosi/ (http://www.sling.to/fosi/)
As I'm guessing you're using windows.
You'll need your server name (mars.iwebhosting.com, or somesuch) and your username and password.
After that, once it's connected, it works alot like windows explorer.
Try it, if you have questions, I'll help.

Hi,
You see, now what in blazes is my server name? I use Windows, access the internet with MSN.com, and have Frontpage 2000. Is the server name the same as the web host site or the internet provider.

t's the FTP server name, usually ftp.domainname.com; ftp.msn.com in your case, most likely. I prefer using CuteFTP (http://www.cuteftp.com/), but whatever works well for you. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

David,
I assume you're using FrontPage 2000 to build your web page. You should be able to publish directly to your web site with FrontPage without an FTP program. I can with FrontPage 2002.
You will need to have a specific address to which you are publishing your web page to. Most Internet service providers will provide you with your own Internet address that you can publish to, but I'm not sure about MSN.
Each ISP has certain steps you have to go through in order to get the Internet address ready to accept the upload. These steps are usually explained somewhere on the ISPs own web site.
I hope that helps, Ronnie

To answer the 2nd part of your question:
"also how does this relate with communicating by the internet?"
FTP is file transport protocol, meaning it transfers files, rather than HTTP which is hypertext transfer protocol, transfering images and text understandable by a web browser.
FTP puts webpages on the net, http brings them down.
Since you're using frontpage, I believe the server needs frontpage support installed in order to upload, but I may be wrong.

Cool. Ok, Dave, dude it's still easy. (at least it seems to be from here, I don't remember setting it up for the first time)
Save all your stuff (html pages, pics, whatever) in a folder from frontpage. Then use FTP to upload it to the remote computer, then go there (in your web browser) and check everything, making sure all the links work, images load, etc.
Or...
Get "HTML for the WWW" by E. Castro (I think version 4 is out now) and learn to write html code. Then you won't need frontpage or hotdog pro or dreamweaver or any other 'html editing' programs.
Also, once you've learned the code and you see something cool on the web you want on your site, you can (by 'viewing the source') borrow that piece of code and make it work for you.
You'll still have to ftp upload, but you'll know what's going on with the code when something doesn't work how you want it to.

good input thus far. Just think of FTP as the method of communicating with another hard drive on a server located off site. Most of the time it'll work in the same drag-and-drop method as I assume you're used to in Windows.
it's easy; don't sweat it.
cheers,

Thanks so far,
I don't know much about uploading but before that - there is this program that is trying to help me to upload. It is asking for information that must be obtained by the system administrator. Would this be MSN in my case or can I access a web hosting service? What is the difference in these. Domain name should be in mind first, right?
Still tinkering,
David

Um.....
Where is your 'site' exactly?
Is it webspace provided by MSN? Then yeah, you'll have to ask them for the "server name", which I think is what you're looking for.
Example:
My site name is http://krstofer.org, but it lives in a server in Florida called helios.iwebhosting.com
A web hosting service is a place which hosts your website. There are many free ones, but most want to throw a banner (or some other lame thing) on your site for you. I use http://iwebhosting.com who charges me 10 bucks a month for my site (s, http://crew13.com is also mine) and has been down less than 24 hours in the last 7 years.
A domain name is http://something.whatever (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .tv, ...) or could be http://dave65.msn.com or even http://homepage.msn.com/~dave65
You only have to buy it if you want absolute control (no banners, tricksy crap, or whatever) and want (example, again) http://dave65.com (or .net, .org, ....)
Usually your internet service providor will 'give' you some ammount of "webspace" with your internet access. This is what you're trying to fill, right?

Register a domain name at register4less.com
it costs $15 a year and includes 5mg hosting (no banners of course). I think they r good for basic sites.
good luck

This,
is about as far as I have gotten. I have my own domain name registered for 1 yr. so far. The hosting service says I need to use an FTP service to upload my files now. They even gave a few free FTP place to use. I am still trying to fill in the blanks. I know my address, it is their address or addresses that is playing ping pong with my mind, ha.
I feel like Pink Floyd's "The Wall", ... anybody out there?

Usually, you have to wait a couple of days for your domain to filter out into the DNS systems and then you can get to it.
For FTP, you can usually connect by using an address of the form ftp.yourdomain.com. Or your hosting service shouuld have given you an IP address to FYP into.
