When you upload something to a site, ie posting picture or transfering file which uploads to another server(?), does it remain permanately within their server/system?? or can it be deleted/removed? I ask since i know that simply deleting doesnt necessarily remove things completely.

Basically, it's gone once you delete it. Most servers have a daily or every 6 hour backup solution so if you want to make sure nothing's backed up, put it up, download it, delete it fairly quickly.

Just delete it.
Then it's gone.
Unless it's national security somethings, or a note to your al-queda (sp? ... whatever) friends, or naked pics of yourself, and then what the hell is it doing on the internet anyway?

lol yep. krstofer. I'm the last link to binny here in the states....but 'shhhhhhhh'.

I know I can delete some things. but there are times when files are uploaded to a site, ie during file transfer, that can't be manually deleted by me. I was wondering if that site's server kept it in their system and if so how long. I plan to test this out... by sending file and after it uploads and they provide a link i can click onto to access the file, ill save it and see how long it remains active. i was just curious. and about the nakid pics.....another 'no comment' http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

If this is a web server that you pay for (or a free web site service), you should have permission to upload, download, and delete files.

As for permanently deleting a file and making it unrecoverable, the same goes for servers as your home PC.

When you "recycle" something on your computer, the computer rearranges the numbers (all files and everything are made up of numbers... zeros and ones) and when you run out of space on your hard drive it starts reusing the files that you recycled.

There are programs that allow you to recover these "recycled" files. The only way you can be sure that a document (naked picture) is no longer accessible on a hard drive, is by destroying the hard drive physically.

Or by overwriting it with zero's and ones, with a few programs which I can't remember the names of at the moment.
We used them in the Military, and they passed our security...

You can download Sure Delete v5.1 for free and it will overwrite deleted files.

Well, i have a couple of programs that do overwrite/bleach files (to max 7-10). This gets rid of files from my hard drive but what I was referring to was not what was saved or stored in my computer. Maybe im not being clear or understand myself how to explain. thx for your responses all.
BTW, couple of the programs to get rid of deleted files are "Window washer" and "Shredder"

Allows you to free up ALOT of space on your puter.
