Like most people, I am so sick of all the spam & pop-up ads.

I use hotmail and do not really want to go to outlook.

What software are you using, how much does it cost and what would you recommend using?

I would recommend using the Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/) browser for sites that you know have massive pop-ups. It's free and it works all the time.

BTW, I'm going to move this to the Computer forum. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

re: popups, get a browser that will stop them, e.g. Mozilla. I use Safari, but I'm on a Mac.

re: spam email, I counter it by using email that isn't accessible through public knowledge; I have my own web host that supplies email capabilities in the package. Costs $7-8/month for everything (storage, bandwidth, server-side apps, etc). In addition, it has a built-in spam filter; if that doesn't catch it, the email client on my computer (Apple Mail, similar to MS Outlook) will.

This also gives me the flexibility to set up multiple accounts... I have one in particular that I use if I have to give an address out to a company (ordering stuff online, etc). Also, make sure your address isn't hyperlinked anywhere on the web. There are 'spambots' that crawl around pages specifically to lift email addresses.

want more info on this stuff? check this (http://carecure.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12470) thread for a few hosting options.

I use Mozilla for OS/2. Pop-ups are not a problem.

Earthlink software includes a pretty effective pop-up blocker. Pop-ups haven't really been a problem with me. They also have a spam filter who blocks some but not all incoming spam. I've configured my mail filters to divert the rest of it straight into my Trash folder.

Another vote for Mozilla. If you must use IE, download the Google toolbar, it will block popups.

As for spam, if you use hotmail, forget about getting rid of it. I signed up for a hotmail account, and I didn't give the address to anybody . The next day I had 10 spam messages waiting for me.

I like Yahoo mail, they have better spam filtering, and I did like I did with hotmail and opened a new account without giving it out. I didn't get one peice of spam.

I have a pretty good system of preventing spam. I have 3 email addresses.

The main one, which is the address I get from my ISP, I only give to close friends and family. I check this one almost hourly. This address gets ZERO spam.

The second one is a yahoo address, I use it for registering on message boards such as this, and give it to online friends. I check this one a few times each day. I get about 3 spam messages a week on this one, probably due to damn chain letters. Yes chain letters, if you pass around chain letters, they are spam traps to get email address. The yahoo filters catch the few spams I get and throw it into the junk mail folder.

The last one is also a yahoo address. This is my junk address that I use if I need to register at a site I don't trust. I only check this one once every few weeks just to empty the inbox.

Jim:

I know Google has just come out with a new toolbar that has a pop-up killer built into it. However, I think it is still in beta. Does the old Google toolbar have a pop-up killer built into it? I am also not sure if I would recommend downloading all the new features that come with the toolbar. I am going to look at the site where you can download the Google toolbar and try to find some more information. I agree with you, the Google toolbar would be a very good option for killing pop-ups.

Hey this is not PN, it's MK99. For some reason the system thinks I'm PN. Maybe I should do some serious mischief. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Mozilla seems to be working well for the pop-up problem. I also get a bit of a kick out of using a non MicroSoft product whenever possible. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

How about purchasing shareware or commercial software to deal with the hotmail spam issue? As I understand some of them require people to "register" with you to make it to your "safe" list. That sounds like it might be a bit of a pain in the ass.

Can one not just use your address book for a foundation of "non-spam" emails? Anything else would go to junk mail folder.. unless you put it on the safe list manually. (a one-time thing)

free progam called ad-aware 6 to clean my computer out of any spyware I get browsing, regularly

Also Norton has advaced web cleaning out of cookies, images (all junk you get into your system browsing) with option to leave cookies you need, like from carecure, intact. I do it once a week.

Mike if you use free KAZAa, there is root of your problem-they put lots of spyware in your computer & then you get pop-ups & spam...I install Kazaa only when I need to dowload some new movie...Then unistall it & use ad-aware...

Try this program its free & youll see how much junk-spyware you get every week

Get Kazaa Lite at http://www.k-lite.tk/ . Everything Kazaa without the spyware.

There are plenty of other freeware popup killers out there. Sorry, I can't name any, since I switched to Mozilla I haven't needed them. Do a google search for "free popup blocker" or something.

I like the free Avant Browser http://www.avantbrowser.com/ , it's much like IE and blocks popups great. Also, there is a plugin (Roboform) available to use for automatically filling out web form. It has a tabbed interface so you can have muliple windows open at the same time and switch between them by clicking on a different tab.
