I need something to get rid of this Messenger Service pop up. If I get 100 more pop ups in next two days, I will be ready to throw the whole computer thru the window... No, seriously, I'm operating Windows XP and I have no clue how to get rid of this messenger. They are just stupid ads that nobody reads or is interested in (at least we don't have children around - some of them are x-rated). Pretty Please, could anybody help me out here?

Thanx,
k

Krajaxa:

Let me know if any of these links help your pop-up problem.

This is freeware, especially useful as some pop-ups should not be seen by children, and people in wheelchairs do not have a lot of money.

4. Mozilla 1.3 is a good browser that also has a Pop-up Killer built into it.

It's probably not worth the trouble to completely remove Windows
Messenger, but you can keep it from running. Here's Microsoft's Knowledge
Base article on disabling Messenger,

Thanks a bunch, PN!

I tried to disable the messenger, and I guess I will see if that helps. I had downloaded a few programs that are suppose to kill pop-ups, but they didn't work. I got a name of the website that is claiming they can definitely KILL my messenger, but they are asking $20 for it. That might be my next step ... If anybody else has a problem here is the addy: www.messengerkiller.com (http://www.messengerkiller.com)

Thanks again!

P. S.: For once I was able to type the post without the messenger pop-up!!!! Maybe it's working?

Before you spend $20, I am wondering if you have any Spyware on your PC because this could be causing the pop-ups. Try dumping all of your cookies and get your PC as clean as possible and then run this program below or something similar that will hunt down Spyware and delete it off your PC.

If you are a heavy net user you may want to download "Adware" and use it once a week to protect your privacy.

Hey, I still got them things going on... I have "Adwere" and was using it daily that didn't work. I'm a cable user, so yes, I'm on-line basicly 16 hrs/day. So I just got fed up and paid $5 to disable it from one of the website that came thru it...

Here is the info for those who might need help as well (and I'm not charging anything either):

In Windows XP:
(1) Select "Start"
(2) Choose "Control Panel"
(3) Choose "Administrative Tools"
(4) Choose "Services"
(5) Right-click on "Messenger"
(6) Select "Stop"
To permanently disable Messenger:
(7) Right click "Messenger"
(8) Select "Properties"
(9) Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "OK"

In Windows 2000:
(1) Select "Start"
(2) Choose "Programs"
(3) Choose "Administrative Tools"
(4) Choose "Services"
(5) Right-click "Messenger"
(6) Select "Properties"
(7) Click "Stop"
To permanently disable Messenger:
(8) Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "O

Any more Pop-Up problems? ZoneAlarm Pro is an excellent firewall and it comes with a very good Pop-Up killer. I think AOL invented the Pop-Ups.

Thanks for the ideas though! I never had that many pop-ups like some of the AOL users get (now that would drive me up the wall), it was just that annoying messenger...
