Free File: DVD Decrypter
Rip DVDs to your hard drive.
By Craig Higdon
Copy your DVDs
Editor's note: The DVD Decrypter site was down at the time "Call for Help" aired. Please download from the mirror site linked at the bottom of this story. I'm no lawyer, but it seems today's free file is barely legal. I first found out about DVD Decrypter in a reputable computer publication and decided to give it a try. As Roger demonstrates on today's "Call for Help," DVD Decrypter lets you copy full DVDs to your hard drive for, you know, backup purposes. At least that's the only good reason I could think of. Like I said before, I'm no lawyer, but this free file seems to walk a thin line in the legal department. DVD Decrypter is easy to use (a good thing since the program and its publisher's website offer little help or instruction).
1. Start the program. It automatically detects your DVD drive, creates a destination folder, and selects movie files.
2. Click the large DVD-to-disk icon to start ripping.
3. Right-click anywhere in the interface to access different context menu options including audio, video, and streaming information.
4. What Fire up your PC's DVD player software and watch your movie. This program is perfect for making backup copies of your DVDs. Just don't use it to burn copies of your movies for your friends. Leo will be very disappointed in you and you could go to jail.
