Since I just got a system upgrade as a belated birthday present (just what a fairly computer illiterate person needs, but, what the heck, it speeds up my web access), I was wondering what machine, operating system, and input mechanism my fellow sciwires are using.

I got an Athlon XP1800+ on an Abit KX7-333 motherboard (replaced a K6-3+ 4500.) Operating system is OS/2 Warp 4.5, and I type (with difficulty.)

Aw, happy belated birthday. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I had to go hunting through my system to find the stuff, but here it is:

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1700Mhz
1.6 GHZ
256 MB RAM
Windows XP

Use a Headmaster to type.

currently I'm using an old skool Dell Inspiron 7000 notebook (p2, 128mb ram, 20gb internal hdd + 20gb external usb hdd, 15" xga display, dvd, WinXP pro). soon I'm switching to an Apple Powerbook (G4, 1gb ram, 40gb internal hdd + 80/120gb external firewire hdd, 15.2" widescreen display, dvd/cdrw, OS X). We're running a cable internet connection ported through a Linksys router/switch with a WiFi LAN -- (sound cool? college was lush - the past 2 years I had direct 10mbps ethernet running on a T3 backbone right in the apartment).

C6/7 injury, gave up on voice recognition, now only use a typing splint on my right hand w/ 'sticky keys' enabled on the OS. believe it or not, I type fairly fast w/ one 'finger'... http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

ahh... technology. I have a degree in technical communication -- too bad computers & I always end up in a love/hate relationship. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif I'd honestly do anything to change my life around & spend most of my time traveling & living in the great outdoors again... w/o these stupid machines... haha

IBM Netvista Pentium 4
CPU=1.7mhz
Ram=1024k

I use IBM ViaVoice release 9. My voice software finally works really well since I double the memory from 512K to 1024 K. I also upgraded to windows XP and it is a much more stable operating system than any of its predecessors. I use a Kensington trackball and can manipulate it with the side of my hand. Andrea Electronics digital microphone via USB (the microphones that go directly into the sound card are slow and use valuable resources). I also have a cable modem and a Linksys switch/router.

Very computer illiterate here. I learn stuff as I need it.

IBM NetVista A Pentium 4. 80Ghz HD, 512 RAM? I got more because the thing was late but forgot how much. LOL CD-RW WindowsXP and still not sure I like it. I'm not fond of MS office products and keep finding that this IE and MS stuff keeps over riding my programs. Like trying to get my fax on my printer to work has been a major hassle when the software for it has been upgraded and should work as primary to WinFax. Grrr I have the Lotus Millenium Suite and it is getting easier and easier to use. I type with a finger splint on my right and my fore finger on my left and occassional jabs with my right thumb. Use the basic mouse. Tried all those fancy ones and my left hand just can't get my fingers to deal with the curves. With the older models I handle clicking as well as any AB. I do slow the mouse down though just a bit.

And yes, I am still an AOL user and tough beans! It works for me. I do have to still tie in our other ISP and Netscape when I totally figure out this two drive business so the spouse has his access too. Oh, and I got the upgraded speakers. They look cool but are very stream lined and light weight so if you need something that stays put go with something else.

9 seconds. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

hp P4 1.5Ghz. 40gb hard drive, DVD/CD ROM combo,256 ram, 32mb video mem. 17 monitor, reg. mouse. Win XP
No reconitin software, I have via voice but them things r a REAL PAIN IN THE A$$. I slide a pencil between my middle fingers and type my way through. No problem at all w/mouse, I do a lot of graphics so I too slow it down a bit and, also use sticky keys.
Reg. dial up conection with MSN, also have AOL but hate it with a passion. And, agree that the relationship I have with my PC is a Love/Hate one.

My computer is an unadulterated piece of crap. The only thing going for my whole system is that I have DSL. My browser crashes on a reliable basis, my memory is way to low, the P2 chip seems to have alzheimer´s, and I´m ready to start playing 45´s instead of CD´s in my CD player. Oh yeah, I´m up to date with Win98, that is, if this would be 1998.

Sooner or later my Scroogeness is going to be visited by the ghost of the electronic past, and scare me into buying myself a good system.

I do use a Touchpad mouse for some high tech flair, and can type well for a C7

mike,
windows xp gave new life to my 466 mhz. since i installed it in january
not 1 crash, not 1 reboot, not 1 blue scream. i use the 466 pc more than
the newer pc. i have to admit microsoft finally got it right with xp.
super stable.

btw, did you know bill gates said in the early 80's that no one
will want or need more than 64k in a home pc.

ditto. my laptop is a mere 400mhz, but any NT-based OS (NT4, 2000, XP) has been 10x better than the 9x versions (95,98,ME). I've run about every Win OS since 95 on mine, w/ the exception of ME. 2000 & XP pro have been the best so far. "super stable?" not so much... but XP does run well. depends what you use it for. it handles photoshop 7.0 surprisingly well for only 128mb of ram. i'm ready to replace this piece though.

I use an iMac at home because I prefer it, and a Windows machine (Dell + Gateway monitor) at work because I have to. I daily curse Bill Gates!

DA, right now the biggest files I download are Max's daughter in her original screen premier movies. She is wonderful! Just like her Papa. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Now, that's a very personal question! I have a Mac G4/800Mz at home running OSX, which is an absolutely beautiful machine. At work I have a Sun Ultra 10 running Solaris 2.8, which is even sweeter, but I could never afford one for home use. Maybe if I win the lottery I'll be able to buy my dream computer.

I don't own a single piece of Microsoft software currently, but I doubt I'll be able to stay "clean" for much longer...

I have an iMac G3 with 700mhz on an OS9 system. I bought it to replace my very expensive piece of crap compaq presario 1700 laptop when the hard drive crashed causing me to lose 4 years worth of articles.
