There are some very knowledgeable people on this forum who may be able to answer questions regarding video-cards, voice recognition software, shutdown problems with Windows, upgrading from Windows 95, 98, ME to XP, flat-panel monitors, Athlon versus Pentium, anti-virus software, deleting files, etc.
Scorpion: I would like to know what voice recognition software are you using and will it work with Instant Messages?

I don't use Voice Recognition software. I have VoiceExpress but haven't installed it on this computer.
By the way, I have an Athlon 1.3ghz with 512MB RAM, an ATI Radeon Video Card with 64MB RAM, a 19" monitor and WindowsXP.
What questions do you have specifically? I upgraded from Windows98 to XP, and it wasn't simple, but it wasn't rocket science either. The main problem is, some hardware isn't compatible. But I like XP. It's a nice upgrade. It's not quite as cool-looking as the new MacOSX though.

PN - Now we have a quest so we all can chat! Good idea asking the computer people how to do it.
RUS- I have this image of you sitting in computer command central...I have a laptop Toshiba 1 gigasomething with a bunch of other stuff. All I know is that it goes where I go. Oh and it is black. Well you said I should post...
Melissa, Hi nice to meet you.:-)
Mary the almost nurse who is graduating in 8 weeks!!
I'm still running OS/2. I'm in the market for new parts - case, motherboard, memory, Athlon 1700 XP+. Might even try Windows one day.
Mary:
Try this on your home PC: go to "start" and then click on the "Run." In the Open: box type "msinfo32" (without the quotes) and then click OK. Windows will then display The System Information window where you can really take a "walk about" view of your system.
PN
Alan:
If you get yourself a copy of System Commander you can run multiple operating systems on one PC.
You can run OS/2, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows XP, etc.

Paul,
I do eyes, ears, hearts, lungs, lines in, lines out, fluids in, fluids out, (usually all over my shoes),medications, P waves, QRS and T waves, chest tubes and the occasional vent and there is nothing that can ooze out of a person that bothers me. I write, I teach, cook and clean, and drive children everywhere on the planet. I have met Big Bird, Barney, Mickey Mouse and I make it a habit to pull Chuck-E-Cheeses tail. Paul, please don't make me go down the rabbit hole of the computer...I will end up having tea with weirdos and seeing the smile of an invisible cat...
I love computer people and they fear me...

Ok, All you DOS lovers are just disgruntled computer geeks, upset that anyone with a little intelligence can now use a computer right out of the box. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Yeah, I remember DOS, a sad excuse for a user-interface where you needed to know a million commands to simply log on to a BBS. Ugly monochrome displays, or 16 colors if you were lucky; screwing with the autoexec.bat and config.sys files just to get a game to run AND have sound. Sure, you may have had more 'control' over your computer...and you may have been in an elite crowd of geeks who actually understood what an REM line was, but you damn sure weren't very productive compared to current computer users, at least if you were an artist like myself. God forbid someone like Xerox comes along and tries to make computers 'user-friendly' by creating a graphical-user-interface (GUI - pronounced 'gooey'). And how dare Steve Jobs swipe that idea and create the Macintosh, which would in turn be swiped by Bill Gates to create the lesser, but better marketed, Windows. God forbid computer geeks everywhere would lose their status as computer gurus when everybody and their brother could use their computer.
This is tongue-in-cheek, with a little real cynicism towards 'DOS-lovers' thrown in for spice. Hey, I was banging away on keyboards back in the day, everything from the Atari 400, to the Commadore 64, to the Tandy TRS-80 and the Apple II. But the mouse & GUI were the best additions to the PC since the hard disk, and I welcomed them with open arms. And for us quads, the mouse (or trackball) and GUI allows us to create in ways never imagineable. You can keep you "CD\..", I'lltake my flashy, personalizeable graphics, and point & click icons. Face it, from one computer geek to another, computers were never meant to stay in the geek's sandbox--you need to find a new badge of honor. Try being an IT and raking in mad money when the next Windows or Mac machine crashes beyond hope for the non-geeks. The triumph of the nerds does not rely on DOS, or UNIX or ASCII modem terminals with X-Modem compression and 'screaming' 2400 baud data-transfer speeds. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

If you own an HP printer, you may want to call Hewlett-Packard because they are doing a recall of the power cord. I just called them and they are sending me a new cord UPS, and they have asked me to send the old one back. Also, I was told to unplug my printer because these cords are faulty and they can result in electric shock or even fire. The toll-free number is 1-800-752-0900.
I also remember DOS, the bulletin boards, etc. My first game was Leisure Suit Larry, the Lounge Lizard. Does anyone remember this game? I also rely heavily on voice recognition and I am glad to know that the technology doubles every eighteen months.

I know you 'DOS' types are much more left-brained than I am. And as a car-guy, I missed being able to figure out engine stuff without computers & wires getting in the way, so I knid of know where you're coming from. I just think some of you guys are holding on to something that's not needed anymore. I don't mean DOS; rather the staus and ego-boost that came from knowing the difference from RAM and ROM or knowing a bit from a byte. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I used Qmodem, under plain dos. I did a lot of bbs calling. Eventually, some of the sysops conned me into starting my own board (of course, theirs are long dead, while mine is still up. Only dialup, and comatose, but alive. Then, they got me into Desqview, and finally OS/2, and I still don't understand most of this stuff! Almost all my dos programs still work under OS/2's dos emulation.
I've tried to keep Monopolysoft off my computer, but I see a Windows partition in my future.

What you turn your computer on, hold down the "Ctrl key," and start your computer in "Safe Mode." Then do a thorough "ScanDisk." Repeat this process and "defrag" your hard drive. I also recommended that you update your antivirus software, twice a week.
The next time you turn your computer on, go to the "my computer" icon in the upper left-hand corner and do a right click on it. Go to "Properties" and then click on "performance," and your "system resources," should be 70 percent free at a minimum.
It is possible that your "hard drive" is running out of space. Delete all your "Temporary Internet Files." I will provide you with a "web site," where you can download a free demo software called "Internet Clean Up" and get rid of files that you do not need and are taking up space on your hard drive.

Thanks for helping me though, I am determined to figure all of this out. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif
Mary,
It would help to have some specification about your computer e.g. size of your hard drive, how much memory do you have, the speed of your processor.
If the hard drive is 80% full then you will encounter problems on the internet. Start with the basics: do a thorough ScanDisk and then defrag your hard drive. You need to do this once a month for maintenance.
I am having connection problems at the present moment, but it has to do with my ISP (Internet Service Provider.)
When I am able I will give you a link where you can download free software to give you more space on your hard drive. Also have someone look at your system resources. When I start my PC I am at 91% free.

It has never run better than this!!!!
Mary:
We took your computer from 68% system resources- free to 90% free and this will improve the overall performance of your laptop. The bottom line, you had too many programs in your "start-up" and the next time you will type in "msconfig" to make sure that you stay at this high percentage.
One more tip that works on Windows ME, possibly Windows 98 and Windows 98 second edition. (I don't think that Bill Gates should have ever released Windows ME.)
Go to Start.
Go to Program
Go to Accessories
Go to System Tools
Click on Disk Cleanup.
Click OK
There may be three boxes that have check marks: 1) Temporary Internet Files; 2) Downloaded Program Files; 3) Recycle Bin. Go ahead and click OK
Click Yes.
Your hard drive is now a little more leaner and meaner, and that is the way it should be.

Is there anyone who is not using antivirus software? I know that there are some computer "gurus" and programmers who do not use antivirus software while they are on the internet even with a DSL or cable internet connection. I understand that the antivirus has to run in the background and this takes up system resources but is that the reason they choose not to use an antivirus program?

Because they're f**kin' punks! It's the same mentality 'taggers' have when tagging (spraying graffitti), or vandals have breaking car windows or smashing mailboxes. The only difference is the computer punks are more 'book smart' but no-less punks.

It seems to give a rush of power to someone otherwise weak. They think it is funny and feeds a sick need in them. They do not seem to need to know that they hurt individuals...of course a really nasty virus like in your body multiplies quickly and filters to many areas arresting normal function. In our nation the reward for this is that you get media attention. Ultimately, selfish attention is the motivation behind anyone hurting anyone else.

I am trying to run an old DOS game called Red Baron. I keep getting an error that says I don´t have enough memory to run the program. I have shut down everything I can think of, but nothing works. It´s only a 1MB game made for 386´s and up and I have plenty of power. Anybody know what the problem is? Thanks.
Mike, Can you give us a little more information regarding your PC? How long have you had it? How many MHz is it? What is the size of your hard drive? Which operating system are you using? There may be many reasons why you cannot play this game "Red Baron," and I think that someone on this forum can provide you with a fix.

Ahh, the dreaded DOS memory problem..."I have 16 MB RAM, DOOM only needs 4, but it says I don't have enough memory." (Said by some computer geek back in 1993)
I don't understand it all, but the way the memory is set up, there's a small section that needs to be available in order to run some DOS programs, usually games. This section is a small chunk of the memory chip, called 'upper memory' or 'high memory'...something like that. In order to play DOOM on my old 386 with 4MB RAM, I needed to boot up the machine with NO drivers whatsoever, then load the sound drivers only. Anything else would use the memory address needed by the game, something like 640k of memory I think.
In order to run 'Red Baron' you'll need to boot your machine using a floppy disk in drive A. this disk should ONLY contain DOS and the fewest drivers (ie sound) the game needs. The game documentation might even tell you how to set up a Boot Disk specifically for 'Red Baron'.
Good luck! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

OK so I have this optical wheel mouse that comes in real handy because I have taken on the habit of working late into the night in my bed and I can put the laptop on a cart beside my bed and run this mouse over a book or even the sheets to get click-happy...well the other day I put the mouse on the nightstand and put my glass of water on the floor so that I would not spill it on the mouse...don't you know I would roll over in the night, fling my arm at the nightstand in my sleep. In the morning, I found my beloved mouse floating helpless in the glass of water, soaked to the gills....I gave it hot air therapy with a blow dryer and let it sit a day, and plugged it in - ( I know Paul you would have told me not to). SHE LIVES....and I am click-happy once again...

I remember hearing that hairdryers were used on our Apache helicopters during the Panama invasion. When it rained, the Apache's started leaking and the control panel and components became wet inside the cockpit. Someone came up with the idea of using hairdryers to blow dry the instruments that had become wet. The plan worked and the Apaches were able to take off and fly again. I think the name of the mission was called, "Just Cause." Perhaps, it should have been called "Just Cause I Want To Put That Pineapple Head In Prison."
Mary, you may want to consider buying another hairdryer as a backup!

For those of you who are using Windows XP Professional or Home, you need to update the latest service Patch One. If you have not been doing your Windows update this file can be 140 MB. Microsoft has known about this for eleven weeks and it is possible for a hacker to get into your system and start deleting files.

*sigh* yeah, another thing for computer users to get paranoid about... people, just don't be stupid w/ the net & you'll more than likely be just fine.
by the way, XP's SP1 isn't a wise thing to try & get if you're using a pirated copy of XP (not that any of you are... hehe)... microsoft has integrated some tracking system built into the windowsupdate system at yet another attempt to crack down on piracy. we'll see how long it takes the geeks out there to hack this one.
don't assume anything about me pirating this stuff (yeah i admit, i have before); i use a Mac now & love it -- & it's fully legal, FYI PN.
EDIT: PN, no, i'm not a hacker... i had a pre-release version of XP pro a college friend got a hold of. we tried it for a bit but i was transitioning to OS X anyway. i read about the tracking stuff somewhere on cnet.com this summer. i fully agree about not pirating it.

On September 9th, 2002, I wrote that Microsoft had released Service Pack One and it was a highly recommended download for Windows XP. For almost two weeks I heard the warning from Tech TV and other professionals that you still need to do this update. I have to disagree with Tech TV, Microsoft, and anyone else who was recommending this installment. I am now hearing from people who did this update that they are now having problems with their PC and today, Jeff Levy, AM-640, stated "Do not do this update." I agree.

Just to be clear, I have never used AVG anti-virus software, but it did get a clean bill of health on Tech TV's Screen Saver Show, hosted by Leo LaPorte and Patrick Norton (no relationship to the Norton Anti-virus). I also am aware that some of the members of this forum use this free software and if you cannot afford an anti-virus this would be a good choice to download.
I have two PCs on a network, and on one I am using Norton 2002 Anti-virus, and I would not recommend the Norton Suite because it will give you nothing but grief. On my other PC I am using System Suite 4.0 by Ontrack, which has a utility program, anti-virus, and a firewall, which sells for around $40. They also offer an 800 number with excellent tech support which is currently free to its members.

If you are a heavy net user you may want to use this software once a week. I use Internet Cleanup by OnTrack, which does get rid of SpyWare and some other things.
"Adware is known by many names--spyware, trackware, or even Big Brotherware. While producers of adware claim its purpose is merely to collect information about Internet habits in order to deliver ads tailored to a surfer's interests, privacy advocates are concerned about the potential misuse of this data. Where does it come from? Most likely it was installed alongside that free software widget that you downloaded just last week, without you even noticing."

If you are using DSL or cable internet and you do not have a router with a firewall built into it, then this is excellent software that will provide you with protection from hackers who wish to do harm to your PC. I did try the demo version which has a 30-day trial offer, and I found that it had an excellent popup killer. I am currently using the free version but I plan on purchasing the full version which will cost around $30 for the CD because of its ability to terminate popups.

for anyone who's interested, I have been running IBM ViaVoice release 10 for a few months now and it is a vast improvement over previous versions. The speech engine has been improved quite a bit and is much more accurate. It also filters background noise and does a better job of recognizing only the user's voice. For example, I can now use the software with the radio or TV (volume is still low) in the background without the software being confused.

I currently use a Polycom speakerphone after giving up trying to figure out how to telephone using the computer and my voice recognition microphone.
Does anyone using their computer to telephone without using a headset?
svenstrs:
I am using the Polycom ViaVideo for videoconferencing. I will call Polycom tomorrow because I am not familiar with their speakerphone. I have a high-speed Internet connection and using a headset coupled with Yahoo Instant Messenger, I can talk with others over the Internet using the voice option. Yahoo Instant Messenger also has a WebCam option and I am impressed with the results. Using Yahoo, there is no charge for talking or videoconferencing over the Internet.
I would think that you could eliminate the headset by using a freestanding microphone and allow the audio to come through the speakers. I do recall that some people use their telephone along with their WebCam to videoconference.
Polycom seems to have excellent tech support and you may want to give them a call.

I understand what you are saying about an icon that is now in the "system tray" and it wasn't there before until your niece started playing on your computer and now you cannot get rid of the "monitor icon." If you have the time, I need to now what operating system you are using. If possible, can you run the Belarc Adviser and then e-mail me the results. Perhaps, you can also include your phone number and we can resolve this issue in about 10 minutes. I'll pay for the long distance call. Pat:
I believe you can use a television as your computer monitor. It is a good question and I did talk to a software engineer at TRW today, who also believed that this could be done but could not provide me with the details. Perhaps someone on this forum can give us a more complete answer.
PN
PN and Pat,
I have a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 video card that has an S-Video output. I have this hooked up to a 53" Hitachi HDTV(and a 17" CRT monitor). It works really well. I'm taking graduate courses online and the lectures are broadcast using streaming video via the Internet. When I watch the lectures, I just switch the TV over to the proper input and it's like I'm in the classroom. I also have a wireless keyboard/mouse for additional convenience when surfing.
If you have a standard video card, I believe you can buy a scan convertor to use any TV as a monitor but I can't guarantee quality.
cjo:
Very cool! Do you know if the university has any PHD programs online? Thanks for responding to Pat's question.

PN,
I'm currently working on a Masters' degree in Information Systems through Dakota State University (http://www.dsu.edu). Once finished, I might go through Capella University (http://www.capella.edu/gateway.aspx) for a Ph.D. Some of the current grad level faculty at DSU received their degrees through Capella. Hope this helps.
cjo:
When I get the chance, I am going to call Dakota State University because I want to learn more about their education on-line through live-streaming video. I was also wondering if you do any video-conferencing and what software and hardware are you using? Good luck with your studies.
PN
PN,
DSU's online lectures can either be watched live or through a recording. I usually don't watch the 4 hour lectures live because I often times don't have the attention span. I watch the recordings and break it up into time periods as I desire. If you have Real Player Version 6 or higher(it can be downloaded free) you can check out this video (http://www.video.dsu.edu:8080/ramgen/dennist/Infs780/013003.rm) link.
I currently don't do video-conferencing, but there are several locations in South Dakota that do. Email me if you are interested in some direct contacts - I'm working from my home as a Grad Assistant this semester.

Hi Pat:
There is not much you can do to speed up your 56k connection to the internet. If you are having problems and your speed is a lot less than 56k, you can ask the phone company if they can clean up the line. Do not tell them that this has to do with a slow dial up connection. Dogger, you can do this.
Go to Start.
Go to Program
Go to Accessories
Go to System Tools
Click on Disk Cleanup.
Click OK
There may be three boxes that have check marks: 1) Temporary Internet Files; 2) Downloaded Program Files; 3) Recycle Bin. Go ahead and click OK
Click Yes.
Your hard drive is now a little more leaner and meaner, and that is the way it should be.

Glad to read that I may have helped you with this problem. 30,000 less files, you may have gotten rid of 20 MB or more (maybe 100 MB) that was just taking up space on your hard drive.

"I am having problems with my hotmail. I think I got a bug from Kazaa. All my mail I send out is without text. I cant ask for help by mail because it deletes all text. Do you have any sugestions?"
Hi Pat:
So, you fell into a muddy pond today and now you think you may have a virus from downloading files from Kazaa. No one can accuse you of not keeping busy and I will try to help you with this PC problem. It is possible to get a virus from file sharing and I hope that you keep your anti-virus software updated (at least three times a week).
If your anti-virus is updated then do a full virus scan, if you haven't already. I'm going to work under the assumption that you do have a virus. If the virus scan comes up clean and tells you that you are not infected, I want you to do an on-line virus scan and I will leave the link at the bottom of the page.
It is my understanding that MSN/Hot Mail has recently been scanning all incoming E-mails with the McAfee anti-virus. It is possible that your anti-virus program is conflicting with the McAfee anti-virus. I suggest turning your anti-virus off and then try to send or retrieve E-mails. It is possible that the problem is with MSN and not with you.
I also suggest that you do your Windows critical updates; however, I strongly warn you: Do Not install any Windows critical updates or service packs that download Internet Explorer 6 if you are running Windows 98 and, maybe, Windows ME. IE 6 works great with Windows XP.
I would also like to know what operating system are you using? Also, which ISP (Internet Service Provider) do you use?
You have your homework assignment cut out for you. Let me know how things go and if necessary, I will call you and try to resolve this over the phone.

This is probably a ridiculously stupid question, but I'm not exactly a computer wizard. Can someone tell me how to back up all of my e-mails in my Outlook Express folders all at once rather than having to do it one e-mail at a time? I get a lot of reports by e-mail and I've not saved them to word docs or anything. Now it's literally into the thousands and if my Outlook Express crashes I'm screwed.

didn't use Outlook Express, but before i got a mac i used Outlook.
in Outlook, go to the file menu, choose import/export, choose a file type to export to (usually .pst), then choose the specific folders you want to back up.
i've backed up > 4000 email messages with attachments, no problem. --- .pst is the easiest format to use if you intend to re-import them later... the archive file may be pretty large depending on if you have a bunch of messages, attachments, etc. mine was well over 150mb.
A much simpler way to back up Outlook Express messages is to click File > Folder > Compact All Folders. This is a MUCH quicker way than moving Outlook Express files to Outlook and then backing up. I use Outlook Express because it doesn't hog resources as bad and, as a quad, it's much easier for me to use.
I guess I haven't finished the process yet - anyway the folders become .dbx files. You can quickly locate these folders and files by searching your hard disk for *.dbx files. Then simply copy them to the appropriate backup media. In the unfortunate event of a hard disk failure(happened to me last Nov.), simply import message and browse to the appropriate .dbx files.
Incidentally, I have 1463 messages from the last five years of school, and with attachments it compacts down to 47MB. I back up my .dbx files to a ZIP disk once a week.
dogger,
what operating system are you using? In most Windows platforms, you can click Start and then Run and type in msconfig. If you click on the startup tab you can eliminate many resource hogging applications from automatically starting up when Windows does. Do you know how much RAM your computer has? And specifically what type of RAM?

JMB & CJO thanks.
CJO, to carry this one step further for a computer dummy, I compacted all folders. I went to "find" and *.dbx to make sure they were actually "there" somewhere. But how do you open them? It asks for application and I have no idea what .dbx is.
Also, now that I've compacted the first huge lot, how can I do this periodically without having to compact all of the ones again that I've already done?
Thanks,
martha
martha,
Here is an article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;270670) from Microsoft that describes backing up and restoring data from Outlook Express.
It's simpler than the way I told you before I investigated, and you just need to copy the folders you want. If you do a search on the Internet, you can find other email programs that will open the .dbx files if you want to look at them, otherwise you could create a new profile and import them.
dogger,
it could be a number of things...sounds like you have plenty of RAM. What happens if you try a normal startup?
I don't know if it'll help, but you could try the tests at pcpitstop (http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/) and see if they have any recommendations. Good luck.

For Windows Millennium Edition, when you go into "start up," you need to keep "system tray," your antivirus, (if you are using a software firewall such as Zone Alarm, do not uncheck) and you can uncheck everything else. When you reboot your computer, your system resources, should be and the high 80's or low 90s. A PC will not function correctly if the system resources are around 38 percent.
I hope this helps and let me know what happens.

Pat: I am wondering if you are using a software application or a hardware device that lets you know the temperature of your CPU. The Pentium 4 (I am not sure about the P-3) will automatically shut itself down if it starts to get too hot. The Celeron 1.8 Ghz and above is built on the same architecture as the Pentium 4. The AMD does not have the ability to turn itself off if it gets too hot and the result can be an Athlon omelet, especially if you plan on overclocking. I would send an email to the manufacturer to find out at what temperature will fry the chip. I'm going to remove the link to TechTV regarding keeping your CPU cool because it seemed like extreme measures for this issue. I would recommend that you replace the fan or fans if they are beginning to wear out. Fans are inexpensive and not very difficult to install. If you are going to have the cover off the tower, then it would be a good time to use a can of compressed air to blow out all of the dust that has accumulated inside your PC. I'll put the link back if anyone wants it.

Small amount of milk (no sugar) sloshed from bowl of Cheerios onto laptop keyboard. This was 2 days ago. It still will only boot in Safe Mode. Is it dead or is there something I can do to fix it? This ancient slow p.c. is not going to cut it for long and a new computer isn't in the budget. :-(

Martha, look on the bright side... you've lowered your cholesterol!
Seriously, you might consider having someone clean your computer. I once spilt soda on my Macintosh notebook, turned it off and let it dry (not to mention let it drain out out the floppy disk slot) and when I turned it back on, all was well. You would be surprised what you can put those laptops and notebooks through!
Are you sure it is booting in safe mode because of the spill? did you do anything else with the computer that might have caused the error?

Lewis, it's a computer which means I am sure of nothing! However, there didn't appear to be any other problems and it only started booting in safe mode after the drink of milk. Last year it was a cup of coffee and that eventually dried and the computer worked fine again. Maybe a little more time will help.

Hi Martha:
Underneath the keyboard of a laptop or notebook sits the motherboard, CPU, hard drive, memory and just about everything you need to make your computer work. If it is running in safe mode, it means that your notebook still has a pulse and I would suggest you print out any documents or addresses that are important to you. Perhaps the notebook will heal itself and you will be able to boot back into your operating system. On the other hand, the more you do with it may shorten the lifespan and you may end up staring at a blank screen.
Because it is a laptop you will need to take it to a computer store where they can take off the keyboard and clean the inside. It is difficult to know what the final expense will be so I would suggest you give them a ceiling figure over which you would not authorize the repairs. I described your situation to PC Club in Hawthorne, California and to Office Depot in Torrance, California. PC Club gave me an estimate between $75 and $125. Office Depot thought repairs might begin at $40, depending on the damage. It is my belief that computers are like a "life-line" to us and we cannot afford to have them go down and not be able to get them back up.
I always thought that a computer forum would be a good idea. I think being the moderator of the forum will be a good experience for me. Dr. Young, thank you for the offer and I'll try to do the best job that I can. Please keep in mind that I will probably be the first moderator who uses voice recognition and sometimes Dragon does not want to obey the laws of grammar or spelling!

To be honest, I was afraid to turn it on today. That comment about shortening the lifespan convinced me to not try it again until I'm ready to try to save as much as I can from it to a zip. I'll probably try that tomorrow or Sunday. I bit the bullet last night and ordered a new Dell laptop. It wasn't in the budget, but I can't work on this old p.c. It locks up about 20 times a day and is slower than molasses in winter. Hopefully I'll be able to recover the major part of my files from the old laptop.
Thanks for all of the help!
martha
Hi Martha:
Sorry to scare you about my comment on shortening the life span of your computer. I am very certain that you can transfer the data from your old hard drive onto your new one. It can be a bit pricey depending upon the damage on the hard drive. In your case, I would be more optimistic because the laptop is able to boot into safe mode. However, it may be difficult to transfer some files if you are going from Windows 95 into Windows XP. Windows 98 will be a lot easier to transfer files into Windows XP by using a cable such as Lap link or Bafo and their priced under 50 dollars. Bafo would be my choice and I think it stands for Best and Final Offer.
Good luck with the new Dell laptop and welcome to the 21st century!
Martha, make sure you get the three-year extended service warranty on your Dell notebook computer. It is not unheard of for the backlight to go out and if you have to replace it, the cost will be almost the same as the price you paid for the new one.

Free File: Fast Defrag
Free up memory and optimize how your system uses RAM and the swap-file.
By Dan Mitchell
Rogue programs are holding your system's memory hostage. The bandits came in, slapped your RAM around, took what they needed, and left the scene without so much as a "Thank you." Your RAM is so traumatized it has memory loss. It can't remember what was taken or how to get it back. This is pretty much what happens every time programs load up in memory. You close it, yet the memory isn't returned so other programs can use it. This grabby behavior can lead to slowdowns, buggy behavior, and system crashes. There are two ways to fix this problem: Reboot or download today's free file. Fast Defrag lets you see how your machine is using physical and virtual memory and shows stats about how hard your processor is working. 1. Click the Clean button to start the defrag process. 2.
Fast Defrag will free up memory from applications no longer in use and optimize how running programs use RAM.Other options give you control over how Windows uses the swap file. RAM is faster than your hard drive. (Data moves faster in RAM.) You can tell Windows to completely use all available RAM before going to the swap file. Use the "Memory Guardian" to automatically maintain your system over long periods of time. Windows 9x and ME users will find this utility especially useful.

Explaining System Resources
Here's how to find out how much memory you have left.
1. Right-click My Computer and choose Properties.
2. Go to the Performance tab and look at the percentage next to System Resources.
When you turn your computer on and you believe that the system resources are too low, then you can change what programs will start when you turn on your computer. When I turned my computer on my system resources are almost always in the low 90s. If you have a lot of programs, in "startup," and then go to "start," "run," and type msconfig "click OK," "click the startup tab," and then maximize. If you are running Windows 98 or Windows millennium edition, you can uncheck everything except "system tray," "Explorer," and do not uncheck your antivirus or firewall. A computer will run better if your system resources are higher rather than lower.
As far as recommending a book, are you looking for something that has to do with computers in general or something more specific?
The link below will provide you with a more detailed definition of "System Resources."

Let's get down to work. A protocol is just a standard set of rules for something to follow. What you want is called an FTP client, such as CuteFTP (http://www.cuteftp.com/). It's not free, but there is a time limited trial available.
Install CuteFTP and load it. A Wizard may startup asking you about your FTP details; if not, click the Wizard button. [I'm using v4.2, for what it's worth]
The first step is Choose your ISP. Do that and click Next [or hit Enter].
Next enter a label for the account. "My web site" or whatever works for you. Click next [or Enter].
Now it's time for the FTP Host address. You should have this, but I would think yours would be "ftp.sympatico.ca", without the quotes. Again, click Next.
Enter your username and password and guess what? Yep, click Next.
For Default Local Directory, click Browse and locate the folder where your web files are located. Next.
The next screen is the Finish screen. If you will only be using the program for uploading/updating your site, click Connect to this site automatically and then Finish.
You will now be connected to the FTP site and you can start uploading your images. To do that, choose the file you want to upload in the left window pane and then click Transfer on the menu and Upload on the drop-down list.
That's FTP for you. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
