Cody: The First Step had its New Mexico premiere yesterday at the Kimo Theater in Albuquerque. The documentary succeeds on so many levels, your VET PAO doesn't know where to begin. It's an incredibly honest work that hones in on Cody's remarkable life, on living with paralysis, professional advocacy, notions of "disability" and family, love and redemption.
Filmmaker Chris Schueler (http://www.christopherproductions.org/) has captured the force of nature known as Cody Unser. Together with mom Shelly, family, friends, pioneering medical doctors/scientists and other loving supporters, they put it all on the table with candor and dignity. The documentary has high level medical/bio-political/social and deeply personal content, yet it feels like a news magazine piece with interesting camera perspectivies, music, cutaway shots and historical footage. Keywords: hopeful, inspirational. Cody: The First Step normalizes paralysis in a way that is sure to break down barriers and promote understanding.
