With an ID catheter I use saline and a piston type flush kit to flush each night. If you feel and infection coming on try dissolving an antibiotic tablet in a large bottle of saline then fill your bladder with the solution and clamp it off for a few minutes then flush again with pure saline.
Hope it helps and as suggested drink, drink, drink lot's of water!!!

For excessive clogging or encrustation of an indwelling catheter you can try a combination of acidifying your urine (vitamin C 1000 mg. daily) and doing a daily Renecidin instillation (not an irrigation). Talk to your urologist about this.
It would also be important to be sure you do not have stones in your bladder. Have you had recent tests for this?

You should have annual tests for stones. Recommended is a combination of kidney/ureter/bladder ultrasound and CT. You should be seeing a urologist annually.
How much water are you drinking daily?
(KLD)
My urologist said no to Renicidin - I called today. He said to irrigate the Foley daily. I forgot to ask how to sterilize the syringe for each use.

You should be seeing a urologist annually.,would my urologist be able to organise all of this?I havent been drinking alot but the last 2 days about 2 litres per day and coffee in between.Seems like things are looking better today......

Riaan, with an indwelling catheter you should be drinking a minimum of 3 liters of water daily. Go easy on caffeine as it irritates your bladder.
If the problem continues, you should discuss the need to do a cystoscopy with your urologist (once you have had stones ruled out by CT and/or ultrasound). You may have a significant amount of "sludge" in your bladder that would need to be removed during a cystoscopy procedure. I have seen this on several occasions. The sludge can eventually develop into a stone if it is left in place, and can indeed clog catheters.
Alan, what was the reason your urologist gave for not using Renecidin??

I had the same problem with the mucus because of augmentation. I had to push on my bladder to get it out. Then had to try another cath. But thats different with your problem.

Sounds like you had autonomic dysreflexia (AD). Do you know what to do when this occurs? It is a serious emergency.
Increase your water intake starting now and see if that does not help with the catheter clogging, and talk to your urologist about possibly getting scoped.

Sorry but why do you say its a serios emergency

Because you could have a stroke and die or have other serious bleeds in your brain, kidneys, or eyes, or cardiac arrythmias. Do you know about AD??
If not, you need to learn NOW (you should have learned this in rehab). Download this document and read it all:

Get a blood pressure cuff and supplies you may need to manage this at home, and be prepared to go to the emergency room if you cannot find and eliminate the cause.

Nurse, now you got me worried,i will only be able to see my doc next week.what i found last night again,(it was my bowel night)is the moment my nurse inserted the sepositry my head started paining for about 2 min and calmed down, but then when my bowel started to go until it finished i had major headache again and took some pain tablets. even when washing me this morning,if she wash me i had a few sudden headache but went away in about a min

I read up about the ad so it seems it could have been my bowel also, will check it over the weekend

You can use lidocaine 2% gel with your bowel care to reduce AD, but if you never had it before, I suspect that you have sub-acute AD all the time from your bladder or urinary tract. When ever you have mild AD, doing ANYTHING that your body senses as painful can trigger full-blown AD.
Do you have a blood pressure cuff? Your nurse needs to record and monitor your blood pressure when you have symptoms so you have this information to share with your physician. If your physician is not familar with AD, then need to also download and read this document:
http://www.pva.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=7657
Then you need to make a plan with your physician for how to find out what is causing your AD, and how you will manage it at home (with the proper medications and supplies) as well as when and where you need to go to the ER if you cannot manage it at home.

You need to have a KUB/IVP/Renal Scan as well as a cystoscopy and urodynamics done on an annual basis.
Your urologist should be able to coordinate all of this and come up with some answers.
